fasstrack Posted November 9, 2015 Report Posted November 9, 2015 Does anyone know about a small group date Pres made in the period of '37-'41 with a trumpet player? It may've been Buck Clayton. I asked Phil Schaap about it, but he insisted there was no such date. But I heard it on the radio (WKCR), I didn't dream it---and it was fantastic playing by Pres. Just didn't catch the name of the recording. Any ideas? I'd be much-obliged as this is must-have music. Quote

The facks, ma'am, as I recall: small group, front line Pres and trumpet (possibly Buck). A DJ on WKCR named Sid Gribetz played it. That's all I know. Quote

I was half asleep when he played it, but I'm sure the scant outline I gave is correct. Doubt that that helps, though. Let's expand the search to include any pre-army Lester, same criteria. John L Posted November 9, 2015 Report Posted November 9, 2015 In addition to the dates listed here, there are two takes of I Found a New Baby from June 1, 1937 with Buck Clayton on trumpet. Teddy Wilson is on piano, Buster Bailey on clarinet, Freddie Green-g, Walter Page-b, Jo Jones-d. Quote
Milestones Posted November 10, 2015 Report Posted November 10, 2015 (edited) Are these possibly the tunes from Lester's first recordings session, which I think was technically under the leadership of trumpeter Carl Smith? The year, I believe was, 1936. If so, it is certainly essential Pres and essential jazz. Edited November 10, 2015 by Milestones Quote

Quasimado Posted November 11, 2015 Report Posted November 11, 2015 That is just beautiful Lester! And he sings! JazzArcheology. Com. has personnel and details: LEE AND LESTER YOUNG'S BAND “A Little Bit South Of North Carolina” Prob. Hollywood, Feb ~July 1942 (Acetate probably made by a fan in a club, probably Club Capri). "Red" Mack Morris (tp, vo), Bumps Myers, Lester Young (ts, vo), Jimmy Rowles (p), Louis Gonzales (g), Red Callender (b), Lee Young (dm, vo). That Lester sang has been confirmed by Lee Young. lp, thanks for posting that! Q Quote
l p Posted November 11, 2015 Report Posted November 11, 2015 i posted this tune not only because some may not have heard it, but because discographies list it as a club in los angeles, and the backing band as also singing the harmony vocals. the harmony vocals sound too perfect for this to be a nightclub performance. i think it may be a studio recording? king ubu Posted November 12, 2015 Report Posted November 12, 2015 btw, sorry l p for repeating what you'd already posted, hadn't noticed ... that was, to me, the first session that came to mind, but I guess it's not the one fasstrack is looking for? Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted November 13, 2015 Report Posted November 13, 2015 Why not send Sid Gribetz and email? He should have his play list. You may get lucky if you know the date and time. WKCR lists the plays lists. https://www.cc-seas.columbia.edu/wkcr/playlist Quote
