clifford_thornton Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 I'm seeing reports that he has passed, but haven't seen official confirmation (Wiki is not official IMO). Anybody?Would be a shame if true. Quote
BillF Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 Sadly, Wikipedia is saying that he died on 20th October. I saw Don play many times back in the sixties. Perhaps the most memorable occasion was when I saw this band. Quote
mjazzg Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 LondonJazzNews reporting his death toohttp://www.londonjazznews.com/2015/10/rip-don-rendell-1926-2015.htmlalso that of Mark Murphy Quote
BillF Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 Another loss! Wikipedia is saying that Mark Murphy died today. Again, someone I saw back in the sixties - at Ronnie Scott's when he was resident in Britain. I am very keen on these two albums: Quote
RogerF Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 This from the Ian Carr website:"The great Don Rendell passed away on Tuesday, 20 October, 2015 in London following a short illness at the age of 89. In addition to co-leading the award-winning and ground-breaking Rendell-Carr Quintet, Don had played in many groups beginning in the 1940s before joining the Johnny Dankworth Seven, after which he led several bands including The New Don Rendell Quintet with Graham Bond on alto, which recorded the seminal album Roarin'. The five truly iconoclastic Rendell-Carr Quintet albums recorded in the 1960s under the aegis of the Svengali-like Denis Preston for his Landsdowne series, catapulted the RCQ into top position for small jazz group for three years running from 1967-1969 in the Melody Maker jazz polls (British Section). Don was a major figure in British jazz and will be sorely missed." RIP Don Quote
sidewinder Posted October 22, 2015 Report Posted October 22, 2015 (edited) What a great shame - it was just the other day that I was wondering how he was getting on, after the sad news concerning Coleridge Goode.A great legacy to leave though and over 50+ years ! RIP, will be spinning some of his fine recordings this weekend. Starting with Rendell/Carr.Sorry to hear the news concerning Mark Murphy too. RIP. Edited October 22, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 Sad news; another giant has passed. 89 is a good full age though... Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 Sad to read that. Only on the edge of my listening (mainly the Carr-Rendell band) but I know he was highly regarded. Quote
RayB Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 89 is a good age but still incredibly sad news, one more giant gone!I loved the Carr/Rendell group and as a youngster played Dusk Fire and Phase III until they were virtually transparent! I think I'll play them again now.Hope Ian & Don are together in heaven. Quote
king ubu Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 Had missed this before - sad news indeed. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 29, 2015 Report Posted October 29, 2015 Hope Ian & Don are together in heaven.Poignant to think that the last time I saw Don R. play was at Ian Carr's Memorial Concert. Coleridge Goode was in the front row at that one as well. Quote
