Harbour Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 As a fairly recent convert to Japanese jazz this series in tribute to the late Masabumi Kikuchi is most welcome, I discovered him through the work he did with Gary Peacock, Voices & Eastwards.the Joe Henderson is wonderful, somehow had never heard that one.v affordable too, though the series name is a tad unfortunate!http://www.discogs.com/label/909924-We-Remember-Poo Quote
mjazzg Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 welcome aboard Harbourthanks for posting this reminder of these releases. I've just ordered Poesy, In Concert and the one with Henderson. Very much looking forward to hearing Poesy and not having to pay the vinyl premium on it (and the others) Quote
Harbour Posted October 20, 2015 Author Report Posted October 20, 2015 My pleasure, there were SHMs of some/all of these back in 2009 so I guess it's the same mastering, plus those all seem to be pretty pricey these dayshttp://www.discogs.com/label/801454-JAZZ-THE-BEST-日本ジャズヒストリー Quote
erwbol Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) Besides the album with Joe Henderson, which was already in my CD Japan cart, I thought Ginkai (Silver World) was most interesting. If you hadn't started this thread, I probably would not have ordered Ginkai. Homefromtheforest Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 I've owned "silver world" for over 20 years and it is indeed a special album. I would buy all these reissues in a heartbeat if I didn't already have the vinyl already. Wonder why they skipped "collaboration", "all about dancing mist" and "hairpin circus"? Quote
Harbour Posted October 20, 2015 Author Report Posted October 20, 2015 Were they on different labels?I wish they had brought them out as mini LPs because the original gatefolds look really nice!Any other recomendations? The only other thing I have is Sadao Watanbe's Paysages. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 They were on Philips as well. Some particularly good sideman appearances from Kikuchi on "Takeru" (Philips) and the debut Kosuke Mine album called "first"..also on Philips.I believe next month there will be a Japanese vinyl reissue of Kikuchi's debut album "matrix"...no CD as far as I can tell. Jay Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 Welcome to the Board. As for this series, I got all of them except for Poesy and Silver World, thinking that the sound palette may be too limited. Same goes for the two Peacocks that I saw were coming out (Voices and Eastward). I assume you guys are going to talk me into all four? The ones that I have opened (I am slowly savoring and also, enjoying the new Billy Cobham box as well as the great Chris Dingham release from a few months ago) have been great. So nice to have this stuff in a physical format rather than rips from the net.I am a recent Japanese Jazz convert over the last two years and have been really enjoying the discoveries. Kikuchi and Hino are at the center for me but still a lot to learn. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) Thanks, ordered the Henderson/Kikuchi/Hino in Concert one. Have a rip of MK "In Concert" and will grab it later. Edited October 20, 2015 by CJ Shearn Quote
ombudsman Posted October 21, 2015 Report Posted October 21, 2015 Homefromtheforest, are you familiar with "Matrix" ? I have not heard that one, and wonder how it fits stylistically.Jay - Silver World and especially Voices are albums of mystical power to me. Poesy and Eastward are good too but Voices is very special IMO.And if those work for you I then suggest Paysages by Sadao Watanabe and S'posin by Helen Merrill. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted October 21, 2015 Report Posted October 21, 2015 Is Kikuchi on "s'posin"? I thought Sato was the pianist on that date but I have not played it in 10 years; a good reminder to pull from the shelves..it's a nice album for sure. "Voices" is a great session too along with "paysages". I used to have an ugly reissue of "matrix" on catalyst but got rid of it years ago because it was such a cheap pressing with an ugly cover. I now have a burn of it from an original Victor and will definitely buy the forthcoming vinyl reissue with original cover art. It's a hard one to describe..it's definitely similiar to the records that came after but to my ears it sounds a bit more relaxed and spare/economical. Worth checking out for sure. Quote
Harbour Posted October 21, 2015 Author Report Posted October 21, 2015 I see that Voices, Eastwards & Paysages came out on mini LP SACD hybrids a few years back, has anyone heard those? apart from the packaging is there anymore noticible benefit in shelling out for those? Quote
ombudsman Posted October 21, 2015 Report Posted October 21, 2015 Sato is indeed the pianist on S'posin, I was going off topic on the tangent of Gary Peacock recordings from when he lived in Japan. Thanks, Matrix sounds like one I should pick up as the reissue lp. Quote
OliverM Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 The one directed by Gil Evans from a different series is apparently very good Quote
