StarThrower Posted October 8, 2015 Report Posted October 8, 2015 Always liked his stuff. I have several late 60s and early 70s albums. RIP Quote
Cyril Posted October 8, 2015 Report Posted October 8, 2015 (edited) Very sad news. RIP, Dave Pike! Edited October 8, 2015 by Cyril Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted October 8, 2015 Report Posted October 8, 2015 Wow. I've liked his playing. RIP Dave. Quote
BillF Posted October 8, 2015 Report Posted October 8, 2015 Sorry to hear that news. Always liked these two: Quote
GA Russell Posted October 8, 2015 Report Posted October 8, 2015 RIP. I've never heard him on a bad album. Doors of Perception was a favorite of mine in college. Quote
Justin V Posted October 8, 2015 Report Posted October 8, 2015 I've been wondering about him since picking up my first Dave Pike album, Times Out of Mind, last month and listening to it several times. Joe Locke speaks enthusiastically about a track from It's Time for Dave Pike in his blindfold test in the latest issue of DownBeat, With the rhythm section of Barry Harris, Reggie Workman and Billy Higgins, I'm surprised that I don't have it yet. I'll be checking out more of Pike's music in the future. Thank you for the music, Mr. Pike, and rest in peace. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted October 8, 2015 Report Posted October 8, 2015 saw him many times long time ago, RIP Quote
mikeweil Posted October 9, 2015 Report Posted October 9, 2015 The Latin Jazz CD he made for Cubop was really good, Peligroso - he will be missed!R.I.P. Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted October 9, 2015 Report Posted October 9, 2015 Also aided Joao Donato in mighty fine presentation of Donato's wonderful music. R.I.P. Peligroso IS a great album! Quote
JSngry Posted October 9, 2015 Author Report Posted October 9, 2015 any thoughts on Infra-Red on MPS? Embarrassed to say that I've long looked at it, never listened to it. Quote
GA Russell Posted October 9, 2015 Report Posted October 9, 2015 Speaking of MPS generally, is there one Dave Pike Set album that is currently available that anyone would like to recommend? Quote
king ubu Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) Somewhat ambivalent about the Dave Pike Set (and Pike in general) ... four of the MPS studio albums (all but "Album" if I'm not mistaken) were reissued by Universal Germany in 2011 (part of the "Most Perfect Sound" edition that should rather have revived stuff like the Archie Shepp and Cecil Taylor albums, but it is what is, or rather was what it was).As a group, the quartet is pretty good, they're groove, rooted by J.A. Rettenbacher's soulful double bass and the flexible beats of Peter Baumeister, is really nice, while Pike and Volker Kriegel weave their lines and textures in and out of it ... as soloists, none of them holds my attention. Makes for good background listening and I guess if you're into that stuff it could be a nice sonic texture for some kinds of trips ...There was also one live album, reissued by Promising Music (the label that also brought "Dear Prof. Leary", "Fly Fly Fly Fly Fly" or "Afro-Disiaca" back but no longer has access to MPS masters now the ownership changed) - I guess I'd recommend that one ... or maybe the "Masterpieces" compilation from Motor Music (who did some MPS reissues in the mid 90s) - used copies available: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000024S2O Edited October 13, 2015 by king ubu Quote
Peter Friedman Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 Pike is actually a bebopper, and the recordings he made with Barry Harris and Bill Evans show him at his best. His MPS sessions take him away from what I perceive to be his strength ,and are not anything I enjoy. Quote
JSngry Posted October 13, 2015 Author Report Posted October 13, 2015 I do appreciate the blatant disregard for avoiding the shin-revealing socktop line. Quote
HutchFan Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) I do appreciate the blatant disregard for avoiding the shin-revealing socktop line.Good one, Jim. That made me laugh.Revealing shins or no, that's one UGLY cover. Puts me in the mind of Pepto-Bismol. EDIT:No disrespect intended towards the musicians. Can't say that I'm on board with the graphic artist or the photographer though. Edited October 13, 2015 by HutchFan Quote
JSngry Posted October 13, 2015 Author Report Posted October 13, 2015 It was all the rage at the time. Quote
GA Russell Posted October 14, 2015 Report Posted October 14, 2015 Thanks guys for your opinions of the Set. I thought they were supposed to be much better than that. Quote
