psu_13 Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 I came across this download today, it seems to be a mashup of multiple sessions that are now out of copyright, but I can't find them all... anyone know what they are?http://www.amazon.com/Money-Maker-Quit-Go-Traveling/dp/B014871IRE/Thanks a bunchPete Quote
John L Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Strange indeed. Some of the tracks would seem to be from the Argo album, "Max." Others would seem to come from "Featuring the Legendary Hassan." Some tracks I don't recall Max recording as a leader. So there are probably songs under the leadership of others. Quote

mikeweil Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Nagel Heyer is a European label, and over here it is legit. Quote
JSngry Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 Not the best choice of word....I meant "legit" in the sense of releasing original projects (and frequently strong ones). Haven't known them as a reissue label, PD or otherwise. Quote
JSngry Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 Wow, this is kinda creepy...apparently the label does not list these items in their catalog, even downloads. ejp626 Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 So I don't want to get into a big debate about the morality of these labels, but they do appear in eMusic (at least the Canadian version), and I really wish there was a way to filter them out. Now if you do a search for Sonny Rollins or Miles Davis, you end up getting 75%-85% PD labels that are sort of just cannibalizing each other. It's very frustrating and that can't be good for getting newbies interested in jazz. It gets to the point where you need to search for the particular album you are looking for outside of eMusic (Google or Bing or something) and then linking in. (I guess that isn't so different from the Organissimo search function these days...) Quote
psu_13 Posted October 4, 2015 Author Report Posted October 4, 2015 These also seem to turn up with surprising frequency in the U.S. iTunes/Amazon/Spotify databases, even though the recordings are theoretically not out of copyright yet. Ah well. Quote
Joe Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 Yeah, strange provenance for these. Like Jim, I was surprised to see them carry the Nagel-Hayer imprimatur. Quote
JSngry Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 Credit due for the Boris Rose quality of the titles and covers of some of these things, certainly they are paying homage to the great bootlegger, and some of them are pretty damn funny, hopefully intentionally.I know it's legal in Germany. And I get that making an honest living as a jazz label is tough, and that maybe it's inancially tempting to be both honest AND legal. But let's note that Boris Rose released airshots and other things of that nature, not PD studio material of days gone by that fell into his lap through no effort of his own. mjzee Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 It's very possible that Nagel Heyer is unaware of this bootlegging series. Quote
JSngry Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 Not if they mention it on their own website, which they do. http://www.nagelheyer.de/hot-news.htmlAnd remember, it's not "bootlegging" over there. It's "public domain". Quote
mikeweil Posted October 9, 2015 Report Posted October 9, 2015 Kind of reminds me of the series that Dreyfus put out some years ago, which was not the success they thought it would be and was terminated. Of course they are not giving reference to the original issues to avoid legal issues or whatever - right now I have the impression there are several times as many reissues of this type than from the companies that own the masters, which is sad. Just looked at the Cal Tjader compilation they made: a strange mixture of tracks from several 1950's Fantasy LPs, even two with Stan Getz without Latin rhythm, and some from his Skye LPs from around 1970 which have been bootlegged half a dozen times (and are not yet public domain in Europe!). Not necessarily experts at work - I will avoid these. Quote
