Dan Gould Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Unbelievable, so soon after his surprise retirement announcement. RIP. Quote
fasstrack Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 I'm heartbroken. He was a friend besides giving me countless hours of pleasure. He also was a real jazz warrior.R.I.P. Quote

duaneiac Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 OMG, that's a shocker. He pretty much managed to play right to the end then, as it turned out, retirement or no. He certainly did things his way and he and his music will be long remembered. May he Rest In Peace. Quote
soulpope Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 thank you for the music and R.I.P Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 thank you for the music and R.I.PGreat rhythm section, of course, but Woods more than holds his own. I've told my story 'bout playing his Warm Woods LP in the Electric Fetus before haven't I? Quote
sidewinder Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 (edited) Stunned to hear this - but thankful for all the music. He leaves a great recorded legacy - RIP.This is turning out to be a brutal year for jazz passings. Edited September 29, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Sad news... Woods was a wonderful player, and a most interesting, intelligent and articulate man. Quote
Justin V Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 I'm lucky to have been at that final concert and to have that memory of him going out still playing so well and being able to end his playing career on his own terms. I was hoping that he'd be able to enjoy a happy and healthy retirement. Thank you for the music, Mr. Woods, and rest in peace. Quote

Peter Friedman Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Though many here were not fans of Woods playing over the past 30 or 40 years, I was not one of them, and enjoyed his playing throughout the various stages of his long career.I will miss Phil no longer being part of the jazz scene as both player and writer. R.I.P. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 (edited) A sad day. Thanks Phil for all the music you gave the world. RIP now. Edited September 29, 2015 by Hardbopjazz Quote

Milestones Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Count me as among those surprised and saddened. In the long run, Phil seemed to have been under-rated, But certainly he proved what a great player he was. His recorded output wss huge, and there's not all that much of it in my collection. I need to add more. Now playing Upswing, a Tom Harrell record with Phil and Joe Lovano. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 It's a shame he wasn't able to enjoy his retirement. Life is sometimes cruel at times. Thanks Phil for all the great music over the many years. Quote
JSngry Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 RIP, and fullest, deepest respect. Talk about a guy who was there in SO many places, that was Phil Woods.I truly regret that he passed on before he could write his memoirs. Quote
marcello Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 Without telling tales out of school, I've been told that he chose his time and his way out and on his own terms, after suffering with ill heath for so long.Great musician and advocate for the music. Quote
HutchFan Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 (edited) So sorry to hear this news.I'm sad that he's gone. But I'm grateful for all of the wonderful music that he made and the legacy he left behind for all of us to enjoy. Though many here were not fans of Woods playing over the past 30 or 40 years, I was not one of them, and enjoyed his playing throughout the various stages of his long career.I'm with you, Peter. I think Phil made great music from the beginning of his career to the end. Edited September 30, 2015 by HutchFan Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Yes this comes as a surprise to us "outsiders" so soon after his retirement announcement.R.I.P.I wonder, though, if maybe he knew that his days were (very) numbered and chose to bow out in style this way by formally announcing his retirement the way he did. Quote
JohnS Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 Very sad news. I've been playing his 50s stuff quite a lot recently. Quote
