OMG, that's a shocker.  He pretty much managed to play right to the end then, as it turned out, retirement or no.  He certainly did things his way and he and his music will be long remembered.  May he Rest In Peace.

Stunned to hear this - but thankful for all the music. He leaves a great recorded legacy - RIP.

This is turning out to be a brutal year for jazz passings.

I'm lucky to have been at that final concert and to have that memory of him going out still playing so well and being able to end his playing career on his own terms.  I was hoping that he'd be able to enjoy a happy and healthy retirement.  Thank you for the music, Mr. Woods, and rest in peace.

Though many here were not fans of Woods playing over the past 30 or 40 years, I was not one of them, and enjoyed his playing throughout the various stages of his long career.

I will miss Phil no longer being part of the jazz scene as both player and writer.

Count me as among those surprised and saddened.

In the long run, Phil seemed to have been under-rated,  But certainly he proved what a great player he was.  His recorded output wss huge, and there's not all that much of it in my collection.  I need to add more.

Now playing Upswing, a Tom Harrell record with Phil and Joe Lovano.

Without telling tales out of school, I've been told that he chose his time and his way out and on his own terms, after suffering with ill heath for so long.

Great musician and advocate for the music.

So sorry to hear this news.

I'm sad that he's gone. But I'm grateful for all of the wonderful music that he made and the legacy he left behind for all of us to enjoy.

I'm with you, Peter. I think Phil made great music from the beginning of his career to the end.

Yes this comes as a surprise to us "outsiders" so soon after his retirement announcement.

R.I.P.

I wonder, though, if maybe he knew that his days were (very) numbered and chose to bow out in style this way by formally announcing his retirement the way he did.
