Teasing the Korean Posted September 12, 2015 Report Posted September 12, 2015 Just picked up this CD featuring both of Dolphy's albums with the Latin Jazz Quintet, plus a bonus track from a Max Roach session. The sound quality sounded good on first listen, like it was from a tape source as opposed to a vinyl rip. Anyone have this? What do you think of this particular reissue, or the music in general? Quote
king ubu Posted September 13, 2015 Report Posted September 13, 2015 The music is nice but rather slight. One album was initially on Prestige (included in the box and I guess out there in the OJC series, too?), the other on United Artists. Two completely different bands going by the same name btw. The UA album was recently (2011?) back on CD in Japan. Quote
mikeweil Posted September 13, 2015 Report Posted September 13, 2015 It's probably a bootleg copied from the CD reissues on Original Jazz Classics and Palladium, respectively. Conga player Juan Amalbert who plays on the first session founded the Latin Jazz Quintet, the band name was hijacked by Felipe Diaz who was the bongo player on the Quintet's first session with Shirley Scott. The band was a solid Cuban jazz unit, Dolphy does his usual thing on top. Quote
