MomsMobley Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 with Haydn threads scattered like the limbs of Osiris, perhaps this can contain most, if not all, the great man's music... which hasn't lacked attention but has been marked by interesting, problematic questions of performance practice etc... these can be "discussed" (sometimes w/ disgust). to wit-- on one level the Marriner cond. masses w/ Leipzig + top soloists are very good, sometimes better... on other hand, great as Leipzig's sound is... it's too much... enjoyable as itself, the extended historical echoes but period lacking pungency, color too... super-"bargain" Dennis Rusell Davies neither great nor dire btw-- it's better than you'd think an Arvo Part / Philip Glass etc modern specialist could do but also w/ some questionable choices-- excluding C-alto horns in score (meaning parts trascribed down an octave, why?!?!?), applause after EVERY symphony?!?!-- & one hopes it's not anyone's only Haydn symphonies... Still, it's probably more valuable overall, more potential for "revelation," elucidation than, say, the ponderous Jochum London Haydn set that's longtime bargain mainstay-- mine too, thankfully I heard other / better.Haydn quartets HIP threadHaydn Creation / Seasons oratorio threadHaydn keyboard threadstillborn Strurm & Drang thread, notable for Mike Weil mention of Haydn continuo issue***One of the great great lesser known Haydn series' is that of Manfred Huss & Haydn Sinfonietta Wien the divertimenti or cassations, originally Koch Schwann, now wonderfully boxed on BIS for discount price. Huss' sound world & alertness extraordinary, vast improvement sensually, sensibly on vast majority H. symphony recordings per se.Here's a Haydn / Huss overture also Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 (edited) Adam Fischer's complete symphonies? Been very pleased by it. Have grim memories of Derek Solomons' HIP sets on LPs. Bought most of them -- sigh. That was when HIP meant scratchy scratch whine. Edited August 31, 2015 by Larry Kart Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Are those Huss performances the same ones that were on Koch? If so, are they OK in that form sound-wise versus the BIS, because I see that I can get a good number of the Koch (Divertimenti and Overtures) used at good prices. Quote
king ubu Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 So, what are the opinions on Hogwood and the new Antonini symphonies?I've no progressed far with Hogwood but enjoyed the first few discs, and I've been quite impressed by the Antonini discs (Haydn_2032 - guess that's the year they plan to wrap up the series, haven't studied the usual extensive booklets alpha always provides). Larry Kart Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Also, Moms, are the Divertimenti Huss performs the Divertimento for Winds? I have a Consortium Classicum set of those and am happy with it.http://www.amazon.com/Haydn-Divertimentos-Wind-Joseph/dp/B001HU91TI/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1441030801&sr=1-1&keywords=consortium+classicum+haydn Quote
psu_13 Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Complete quartets by the Angeles. I find these nice, so far.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007CW2FGG Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Certainly not "hip" but wonderful: Quote
MomsMobley Posted September 1, 2015 Author Report Posted September 1, 2015 LK, the BIS 'Complete Early Divertimenti' box contains the contents of four Koch/Schwann discs remastered plus a fifth of pieces rec. 2005-2009; note there's NOT one to one correspondence because program new pieces added here/there + extra disc. I haven't heard the Koch/Schwann originals but almost certainly worth picking up.CN, did you know the Schneider from 78s &/or LP? Certainly a notable project & signpost of Haydn revival, what I've sampled has been hit & miss, I felt I got "burned" when younger spending $$$ on Pro Arte 4tet Haydn boxes on Testament, which are mostly enjoyable but not... the more in every direction that Haydn demands? Aeolian 4tet mostly makes me want to take off my 'earth shoes' and throw them at the stereo, makes the Amadeus seem taut & frisky. And it's shame because the age needed Haydn then, badly but...Here's Marriner's Paukenmesse btw, certainly an excellent performance of its kind... a little March, also from the BIS set above Quote
Larry Kart Posted September 1, 2015 Report Posted September 1, 2015 (edited) Moms -- Did you see my PM?Also, do you know whether the Huss Haydn Divertimenti are the same Haydn Wind Divertimenti that make up the Consortium Classicum set or a different group of works? Larry Kart Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 Huss' Haydn Overtures Vol. 1 just arrived. Superb. Quote
