kinuta Posted August 28, 2015 Report Posted August 28, 2015 Sydney Pollack's documentary of the recording of the album. This looks really fantastic, I can't wait to see it. Quote
Enterprise Server Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 I will definitely look for it. Aretha is one of the most soulful and earthy singers this nation has ever produced. Love all of her Atlantic recordings and I have a collection of her Columbia recordings (original records) that have been over looked or ignored.... Quote
mikeweil Posted September 1, 2015 Report Posted September 1, 2015 Considering the success of the album, why did the documentary remain on the shelf for so long? Quote
mjazzg Posted September 5, 2015 Report Posted September 5, 2015 Aretha prevents premierehttp://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/sep/04/aretha-franklin-documentary-blocked-from-telluride-film-festival-by-judgealso explains why doc wasn't aired sooner I think Quote
JSngry Posted September 5, 2015 Report Posted September 5, 2015 Aretha's working the casino circuit now..this one is up the road in Durant, Oklahoma. Anybody seen her show lately, does she still have it at length? Quote

Anybody seen her show lately, does she still have it at length?I saw her a few years ago and was underwhelmed but she played The Bowl here recently and I heard/read that she was much better (both physically and musically). JSngry Posted September 5, 2015 Report Posted September 5, 2015 Thanks, Joe...this is one of those things where the time and expense risk/reward ratio is very much at play for me...never caught her in her prime, and the recent TV appearances I've seen have been inconclusive, spots, not shows, and not always great spots at that....Interesting trivia note, though - one of the more recent times she did this gig, a buddy of mine got called for the trumpet chair, and he asked me if I knew this musical director guy, H.P. Barnum? PSHAW, yeah, do your homework, buddy! But I had no idea that H.P. Barnum was still alive, much less active, much less still doing live shows. Survivor. Quote
medjuck Posted September 5, 2015 Report Posted September 5, 2015 A friend of mine was playing trombone with her when I saw her. He told me to look for the bag under her piano. Sure enough there was one that she took with her whenever she left the stage. He told me that she always got paid in cash before performing and kept it in the bag. Must have learned from Chuck Berry. JSngry Posted September 5, 2015 Report Posted September 5, 2015 That's old school all the way. Love it. Quote
