Big Beat Steve Posted August 17, 2015 Report Posted August 17, 2015 Interesting discovery.I didn't know DB ran a Japanese spinoff. Was this "legit" and endorsed (maybe even co-published) by DB or a ripoff/freeloader trying to cash in on the famous name? Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted August 17, 2015 Author Report Posted August 17, 2015 i dunno dawg but its the exact some logo, no? maybe its like "french vogue" or somethin like that, u know Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted August 17, 2015 Report Posted August 17, 2015 Yes it IS the same logo.As for "Vogue", the French and UK record labels were sort of brothers.Don't know about the Vogue mag, though. That may may well have been "legit", but as we all know by 1960 the nipponese were well under way raiding everything copyable (and sellable) in the world for copying and plagiarizing, so why would they stop short of a mag that looked promising? Dan Gould Posted August 17, 2015 Report Posted August 17, 2015 That's pretty cool. I wonder if our DB alum can shed light on the question. Really makes me wonder what was written about him, it was right around the time that his Soul Station - Roll Call - Workout brilliance was 'new'. Quote
JSngry Posted August 17, 2015 Report Posted August 17, 2015 Japanese DB appears to have been monthly, American DB was published, what was it called, "fortnightly" (except for one month a year)? up until the late 70s.. Quote

All articles are in Japanese. Many are translated from the U.S. edition but there is some original content produced for the Japanese edition. Many photos, ads, record reviews. http://www.downbeat.com/default.asp?sect=stories&subsect=story_detail&sid=767http://www.downbeat.com/default.asp?sect=stories&subsect=story_detail&sid=768 Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 17, 2015 Report Posted August 17, 2015 So was there original DB content about Hank around that time? I thought Hank didn't get personal attention from DB until the interview/feature in the 70s. (Was that Litweiler who wrote it? I can't recall now ...) Quote
JSngry Posted August 17, 2015 Report Posted August 17, 2015 Yeah, John wrote that landmark (imo) article. Quote
JSngry Posted August 17, 2015 Report Posted August 17, 2015 Also of interest to me is the photography credits. Other than Charles Stewart, none of those names really jump out at me as familiar. Not taht I'm hardcore about noticing that, but, but for so much of this era of this music, the visual iconography has been kinda locked down by certain images of certain photographers (and not without good cause). Abd/But, it might be refreshing to see these people through a different eye/lens. Or not, you know how that goes. And maybe/probably these were the same photos used in the American issues. http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,897546,00.htmlWhen the first Japanese-language version of the U.S. jazz magazine Down Beat hit the stands in Tokyo this summer, an 18-year-old university student wrote the publishers his fervent thanks: "To me your magazine is as a mountain guide to an amateur Alpinist." Japanese enthusiasts are finding the cool air of American jazz a mighty heady place. Quote

(June has me confused.) Quote

Am not familiar with the work of Bert Andrews or David Workman, but Lawrence or Larence (spelled both ways, it seems) N. Shustak, and Ted Williams were jazz photo regulars. http://shustak.org/life_history http://larenceshustak.photoshelter.com http://www.art.com/gallery/id--a79871-b22914-c23946/ted-williams-jazz-photography-prints.htm http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/2012/04/preserving-ted-williams-photographs.html http://jazztimes.com/sections/news/articles/25238-jazz-photographer-ted-williams-dies Here’s some info on Bert Andrews: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_Andrews_(photographer) Quote
