ghost of miles Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 Listening right now to the Piano Moods set, which put me in mind of this topic. What sets do you think were/are worthy of more attention? Quote
GA Russell Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 It's been a very long time since the Mulligan/Baker Quartet set has been in print on CD (legit). Quote
mjzee Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 Groovin' now to the Art Hodes set. Very nice indeed. Quote
sidewinder Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 Oliver Nelson. That one has taken some flack but I love it !Can I also suggest the Four Freshmen? Quote
GA Russell Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 Can I also suggest the Four Freshmen? You may indeed! I'm sorry I didn't think of it first! Also, I never heard it, but I bet that the Charles Brown box deserves wider recognition. Quote
BFrank Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 Gerald WilsonDefinitely.........and by association, the Carmell Jones Select. Quote
mikeweil Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 Talking about Selects: Onzy Matthews. Quote
Stonewall15 Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 The Art Pepper 3-LP set (number 105). Never issued on CD. Quote
Face of the Bass Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 I'm not sure how all these sets are "rated," but I've always loved the J.J. Johnson box. Quote
king ubu Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 The J.J. is very dear to me, too!The Teddy Wilson also crossed my mind. The Art Hodes ... I still hope to score it some day (get in touch if you have one to give away!)Missed the "Piano Moods", but the "Master Jazz Piano" one is quite nice, too. Quote
crisp Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 Can I also suggest the Four Freshmen? Do we actually have someone who likes this set? I'm usually into this kind of music but I find the Freshmen hard to take at length. The interaction of the voices is not as pleasing to me as it is in, say, the Hi-Los. That upper register is a bit harsh. However, I listen to all my music through a media centre these days and when the odd FF track pops up it can be very pleasing. It doesn't surprise me that Kenton championed them -- he seemed to like music that tended towards the grating, even though it could be quite enjoyable. sidewinder Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 The Freshman is good in small doses. I wasn't expecting a lot but found that I quite like it ! Quote
crisp Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 (edited) Cool! That's pretty much the way I feel about it.In any case, you can't say anything against this track: Edited August 3, 2015 by crisp Quote
mjzee Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 The Art Hodes ... I still hope to score it some day (get in touch if you have one to give away!)I bought mine recently on Ebay from bluenotesound, and I think they have more to sell, so watch for it there. Quote
HutchFan Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 Gerald WilsonDefinitely.........and by association, the Carmell Jones Select.Yes! The Gerald Wilson set is definitely one of my favorite Mosaics. I listen to it often -- particularly discs 1 & 2. Quote
blind-blake Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 (edited) Complete Edmund Hall / James P. Johnson / Sidney De Paris / Vic Dickenson Blue Note Recordings. Was trying for months to sell it on EBay for as low as $49 but there were no takers. I started listening to it again recently, and am really glad it didn't sell. I finally saw the light. A lot of it is just tremendous. Just noticed one one currently selling for $60 on eBay Edited August 3, 2015 by blind-blake Quote

I love this set also particulary discs 1 & 2. Latino is one of my favorite tracks of all time. Quote
ghost of miles Posted September 8, 2019 Author Report Posted September 8, 2019 (edited) The Horace Parlan set (as I’m revisiting it yet again). Perhaps not “underrated,” but maybe even better than it’s given credit for? (Which is the same thing, I guess—although “underrated” usually carries a connotation of being overlooked.) BFrank Posted September 8, 2019 Report Posted September 8, 2019 Another vote for Carmell and Gerald here. Doesn't sound like they're particularly "underrated" though. Blue Mitchell is one that I don't hear much about and is one of my favorites. Quote
GA Russell Posted September 8, 2019 Report Posted September 8, 2019 I love the Gerald Wilson box, but to me it all sounds the same. Quote
Shrdlu Posted September 8, 2019 Report Posted September 8, 2019 (edited) I didn't know that the Oliver Nelson set was under-rated. It took some flak? Anyway, nothing to apologize for there. It is superb material, and it's a set that one might not have thought to issue. The idea is excellent. It is easy to take Oliver for granted: "arranged by Oliver Nelson" is seen often. He had access to the best New York studio musicians and some, such as Danny Bank and Phil Woods, could be described as being in the Oliver Nelson Orchestra. A spin of CD1 from that set ought to drive away any opposition. Edited September 8, 2019 by Shrdlu Quote
