crisp Posted April 13, 2016 Report Posted April 13, 2016 Thanks -- preordered. I think this is my first Mosaic preorder since the Bing Crosby, or as Pres would say, "policeman". Quote

l p Posted April 13, 2016 Report Posted April 13, 2016 $136 for four tunes, 3-minutes each. is that without shipping? Quote
gmonahan Posted April 13, 2016 Report Posted April 13, 2016 Definitely preordered this one, though this will be at least the third time for me for the Basie Deccas on cd. I think this is the first time Mosaic has managed to combine Universal-owned and Sony-owned recordings in one set, isn't it? So, if I have the other Mosaic set, the Complete Savoy set and the Complete Verve set, will this pretty well complete Prez's studio recordings? I'm not counting the live things. gregmo Quote
jazzbo Posted April 13, 2016 Report Posted April 13, 2016 (edited) There's still the Savoy studio material . . . . Don't believe any of that is in either of the Mosaic Young sets. Edited April 13, 2016 by jazzbo Quote

There's this from a Whitney Balliett interview of Jimmy Rowles. It appears on page 301 of his collection "American Musicians II" and probably appeared elsewhere earlier. Oh well. The clip I tried to paste in wasn't accepted. I'll have to type it... "Lester was the coolest man I ever met. He had his own language. He'd turn to me on the bandstand and say, 'Startled doe. Two o'clock,' which meant if you looked into the audience at where two o'clock was you'd see this pretty chick with big eyes. 'Bob Crosby's in the house' meant a cop had just come in, and 'Bing and Bob' meant the fuzz were all over the place." Edited April 14, 2016 by jazztrain manually typing quote Quote

Huh -- all this time I just assumed it was a reference to Bing and Bob Hope because of their association together in the "Road" movies. Quote
jazztrain Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 I had the same thought, but all the references that I've found so far all refer to Bob Crosby. I agree that a reference to Hope makes more sense. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) I remember reading that Bing and Bob Crosby were code for cops because Pres was allegedly busted by a cop that looked like them. Edited April 14, 2016 by jazzbo Quote

SwingItTrev Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 I'm a little uneasy that a big portion of it is sourced from CDs I already own, but there's enough that's new or promising that I'll buy it anyway. Quote
John L Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 Looks and sounds great from the samples! In the notes, Mosaic says that they couldn't present the post-Basie recordings in chronological order for contractual reasons. What is that all about? What kind of a contract would prevent them from putting the music in chronological order? Quote

jazzbo Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 I think that's probably true, the two corporations press their own material. I think this happened in the Jacquet set as well. Quote
John L Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 Still curious. It would seem to concern disc 7 that puts the 1944 Verve session after the first Aladdin sessions from 1945-1946. So the sessions in question are on the same disc, and one would think that they could have just reversed the order of presentation. Anyway....:) Quote
David Ayers Posted April 15, 2016 Report Posted April 15, 2016 Certainly true of the Berigan set. Quote

As we discussed earlier in this thread, Pres also recorded a few things in the studio for Jubilee as a leader and with Basie. Quote
