GA Russell Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 I saw Miles in concert in Washington, DC (I believe it was at Constitution Hall), about November, 1971.At one point Miles introduced the members of the band; but of course with his voice, I couldn't hear him. The band had maybe seven members. The one person that I knew was Airto on percussion. Is there a recording of that Miles band available? Thanks! Quote
mjzee Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 Per Plosin, the only gigs Miles did in Washington in the '70's were the Cellar Door dates in December 1970 and Howard University in April 1973 (with a tentet). His only U.S. gig in November 1971 was in NYC at Lincoln Center - might you have seen him there? Of course, Losin could be incorrect, or there might not have been a recording of the D.C. gig.Miles Davis Sessions 1970-197811/26/71 NYC details Quote
GA Russell Posted July 20, 2015 Author Report Posted July 20, 2015 (edited) Michael, I saw the lost quintet at the Cellar Door in both early '69 and early '70. That was discussed a number of years ago, and there is a thread about it somewhere.I am quite certain of the approximate time frame regarding Constitution Hall. Thanks for that link! However, I am quite certain that Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette did not play at the gig I am referring to. But maybe the music was similar. Edited July 20, 2015 by GA Russell Quote
JSngry Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 http://www.dar.org/constitution-hall/constitution-hall-historyBetty,here. Sammy, here. Miles, not here. Alto player or tenor player?Odds are that Jarrett was on the band, if 1971 was the date. Quote
GA Russell Posted July 20, 2015 Author Report Posted July 20, 2015 Well, that's interesting! But the venue is not as important to me as the time frame. My girl friend in late '71 took me to the show! That's why I remember that it was in late '71. Quote
mjzee Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 Also, per Losin, Airto's last gig with Miles was May 7, 1971. See: http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/Query.aspx?q=M&t=0&c1=0&n1=1&n1v=Moreira%2c+Airto&v=0&c2=0&c3=0&m=0&e=0&y=0&n2=0&c4=0 Quote
GA Russell Posted July 20, 2015 Author Report Posted July 20, 2015 (edited) Jim, I looked for musicians I would recognize from the lost quintet, and also Jarrett (who I recall played with them when I saw them in early '70, making it a sextet), and I didn't recognize any one of them. Michael, I don't remember it being in the spring, but I suppose that it was so long ago I should be humble and say that it could have been. I'll study your link! Thanks again! GA Russell Posted July 20, 2015 Author Report Posted July 20, 2015 Jim, is that Gary Bartz? It's possible. I was somewhat familiar with Bartz at that time, but I would not have recognized him on stage. What I can tell you about the music was that it was extraordinarily rhythmic. I wanted to stand up, but I didn't want to be the first to do so. It was a struggle to remain seated, and I'm sure I would have enjoyed myself more if all of us stood. l p, thanks for pointing that out! Quote
JSngry Posted July 20, 2015 Report Posted July 20, 2015 Yep, that's Bartz. If you saw an altoist with Miles in 1971, it would have been him. Quote
l p Posted July 21, 2015 Report Posted July 21, 2015 (edited) At one point Miles introduced the members of the bandthis is almost certainly an example of how faulty memory can be. Edited July 21, 2015 by l p Quote
Mary Donovan Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 I also am 100 percent I saw Miles Davis in Constitution Hall in about 1970 circa November but realize it’s not listed in DAR files. Quote
