robviti Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 I'm very much looking forward to another jazz weekend in the City March 19-21. Here's my itinerary: FRIDAY NIGHT At the Jazz Standard: Charles Tolliver Big Band, with Gary Bartz, James Spaulding, Billy Harper, Craig Handy, Howard Johnson, Earl Gardner, David Guy, David Weiss, Leron Thomas, Clark Gayton, Jason Jackson, Aaron Johnson, George Cables, Cecil McBee, & Victor Lewis. At the Blue Note: ANOTHER KIND OF BLUE-THE LATIN SIDE OF MILES DAVIS featuring Conrad Herwig, Brian Lynch, Dave Valentin, Mario Rivera, Edsel Gomez, John Benitez, Robby Ameen, & Richie Flores. SATURDAY NIGHT At the Iridium: MONKSILAND-THELONIOUS MONK TRIBUTE with Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, & Dave Douglas. At Smoke: Louis Hayes & Buster Williams Quartet featuring Vincent Herring. Of course, I'll be trying to nab those hard-to-find imports and oop's during the day and visit some of my favorite eateries (Virgil's, Amy Ruth’s, and Brother Jimmy’s BBQ). If anyone is interested in hooking up while I'm in town, feel free to PM me. B) Quote
Pete C Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 I've seen the Tolliver Big Band twice. You won't be disappointed. Quote
kdd Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 Saw Tolliver as well, great, great stuff. Will probably try to see it again Quote
Pete C Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 Hey, I just looked at that lineup for the Tolliver band closely and was surprised to see that Cables, and not Tolliver's shadow, Cowell, will be on piano. Quote
robviti Posted March 19, 2004 Author Report Posted March 19, 2004 i thought i'd bring this thread back up just in case anyone in the city was unaware of these fine shows this weekend. i'm off in a few hours. i hope the snow isn't too bad. but then, nothing is going to keep me away! Quote
BeBop Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 My schedule put me in town just in time for the early Monksiland show. I didn't know what to expect, though I was familiar with all the players - save the rhythm section - so perhaps I should have been. Not sure how/whether the Dixieland (implied) theme would be carried. I'm relatively certain that, if not for the rhythm section, the front line (Lacy, Rudd, Douglas) would have floated away into the stratosphere. Well-anchored, they managed to stay roughly earthbound. Not many surprises (despite, again, not knowing what to expect). Was a bit surprised to hear of the Baroness Nica de Koenigswater referred to the in the present tense as a friend of Douglas. Or perhaps I mis-heard. Can't call this show highly recommended. But worth considering if you're a fan of the principals. Quote
kdd Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 (edited) For this weekend I'd go with Tolliver, killing stuff. I think the Baroness passed away a few years back and before Douglas really hit the scene. That's a pretty heavy schedule jazzshrink, at least there is no snow to slow you down. I might try to catch Tolliver again but probably on Sunday, enjoy the shows and give us a report if you can Edited March 19, 2004 by kdd Quote
Christiern Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 in NYC, and elsewhere throughout the world, this is also a great weekend for anti-Bush/War protest! What more can you ask for? Tolliver, Graves, et al and a free speech exercise! Quote
sidewinder Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 I'm going to have to find some way of getting out to NYC this year just to see this Tolliver Big Band. The frustration of it ! Quote

Pete C Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 (edited) I still haven't been to those Sundays at CB's, and this Sunday is a particularly interesting evening. I've been meaning to catch Boston's Fully Celebrated Orchestra for some time. I also hear from someone who attends those gigs regularly that turnout has been slim most weeks, so they can use the audience. Edited March 19, 2004 by Pete C Quote
robviti Posted March 24, 2004 Author Report Posted March 24, 2004 Well, I made it to all four shows. Whew! My favorite was Herwig's Latin Side of Miles. Conrad, Ronnie Cuber, and Dave Valentin were smokin'!!! I spent some time talking with James Spaulding before the Tolliver gig. He was very gracious and offered some fiery solos of his own. The Monksiland date was good, but not great imo. The Louis Hayes show was also excellent. It was great to finally see Vincent Herring in person, and hearing John Hicks play is always a treat. I scored several great titles at Academy and JRC. I also found quite a few unexpected and inexpensive gems on St. Marks Place in the Village. I even bought some Supreme Crates at the Container Store to put my albums in. All in all, another great visit to my favorite city in the world! In a week or two, it's off to Chicago and then Tucson. Beware jazz fans - I come to devour your best barbecue and pillage your favorite cd stores! Quote
