GA Russell Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 (edited) John David Crow has died at 79. RIP. I had his bubble gum card in 1960. In those days, the Cardinals had Crow, Bobby Joe Conrad, Jackie Smith, Charlie Johnson and Sonny Randle, but not enough to compete for the championship. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/19/sports/ncaafootball/john-david-crow-heisman-winner-at-texas-am-dies-at-79.html?_r=0 Edited June 19, 2015 by GA Russell Quote
Aggie87 Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 Count me as a fan (obviously). I once met him on the A&M campus back when I was a student, and looked at him in awe. I was young and he seemed legendary even then. Also met Jackie Sherrill a few times, and didn't look at him with the same reverence, but really enjoyed chatting with him. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 (edited) I had his card when he was with the 49ers, later. I distinctly remember him running well in games that I watched on TV in 1965. Ken Willard and Crow formed a good running attack for the 49ers then. An odd piece of family trivia. My brother was born in 1966 and before he was born, my parents discussed his name at the dinner table. We were living in Wisconsin, Packers country. They decided on John for his first name, and were discussing his middle name. My mother favored David. My father said, "if we call him John David, he will be known as 'Crow' all his life. No one will call him John. Everyone will call him 'Crow' after John David Crow." My brother is almost 50 now. I am not sure that the Crow name would have seemed so natural even shortly after John David Crow's retirement, but they did not go with David for his middle name.
