captainwrong Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Found a nice copy of the 5-lp Parker Savoy box set from 1978 and have trouble finding out specific info about it. Every Google search I try brings up a multitude of hits, but other than the odd copy for sale, no relevant info to this specific release. Anyone familiar with it? Thoughts, comments, etc? They price is nice, but money is getting tight and I probably have most of what's here in various forms already. Thanks! Quote
paul secor Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Grab it. Classic music presented beautifully. Grab it! Quote
jazzbo Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 An excellent booklet. Sound is very good. I'd take Paul's advice if the price is right. Quote
king ubu Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 The notes were - thankfully! - reproduced in the Savoy/Dial 8CD set as well ... but the LP box was my first real exposure to classic Bird. I think I only knew the Massey Hall concert before that - and wasn't quite ready for the condensed music of these forties studio sessions and their intensity. So yeah, I join the recommendations easily! http://www.discogs.com/Charlie-Parker-The-Complete-Savoy-Studio-Sessions/release/1954167 (even gives line-ups, but granted they're hard to sort out in that layout) Quote
JSngry Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 Loved/Love it so much that I've still not felt the urge to buy the CD versions, and yes, great book/notes. However - it is LPs after all, so too much "artifact" can ruin your day if you know the material on CD. But between the book and the cover painting (which for some reason really resonates with me in a way I can't fully explain)...if you get a deal, take it, it's Bird, your karma will not go bad. I mean, geez, perfect balance between human and statuegodmonument. And the colors...damn. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 I have a copy of this set - will dig it out as it is too long since I last spun the LPs. Quote

I usually spin the CDs as well nowadays ... but ya know, when we'll all be 300 years old and all CDs will have failed on us, the LP should still be working (provided you've got a cat's claw and some kind of hose to connect it with your inner ear ) Quote
captainwrong Posted June 3, 2015 Author Report Posted June 3, 2015 Enablers, the whole lot of you! Lol. Well, I asked for it, didn't I? Anyway, that's pretty much what I was hoping to hear. I have most of this music on various CDs, but the thought of having it all, in order, and in a handsome set is really appealing. I was in the BMG club when Denon started doing the straight reissues of the old Savoy LPs. I picked up a lot of those, but let's face it, they are the definition of random at times. Never really upgraded, so that's why this set caught my eye. I'll swing by and see if it's still there. Quote
