page Posted August 7, 2015 Report Posted August 7, 2015 (edited) Ah, thanks Jim. I probably won't install it anyway, since I'm almost certain things will not work for me and I'll hate the Cortana. My nightmare would be I wouldn't be able to access my musicfiles and since it was already a hassle with the Windows I've got now. I'm not getting into the new any time soon. However when/if your computer breaks down, you'll have to since any new one won't offer the old windows, right? Edited August 7, 2015 by page Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted August 7, 2015 Report Posted August 7, 2015 You are probably correct that something won't work. I have issues with a program I use to edit music. The software tells me there are no sound cards detected. Quote
JSngry Posted August 7, 2015 Report Posted August 7, 2015 Dell is still offering machines with both 7 and 8, but for how much longer, I don't know.I don't really need a new machine yet, but the Dell XPS I've running for a whole lot of years now is bound to give out eventually, so I'm considering having my son or one of his circle build me one. And THAT will be time to decide on 7 or 10. So far, only hearing good things about 10, so that's probably where I'll go. Quote
page Posted August 8, 2015 Report Posted August 8, 2015 (edited) I have Windows 7. My music software like Band in a box and Sibelius work differently from when I had XP. They both still work but there are some compatibility issues with opening etc. Other software won't work at all with Windows 7. For me the Sibelius is the most important. I've been saving all my files in 4 formats, sib, xml, midi and tif, to make sure I won't loose things completely when one of these days my pc will break down. It is from 2009. I know Finale is much cheaper than Sibelius but I'm so content with Sibelius I'd rather not switch and besides because of the differences I would need to write everything down all over again. That probably will happen some day of course but I want to postpone that moment for as long as I can. Other software that wouldn't work anymore were things like my Canon software for my camera, Nero and some others I can't come up with now. So with another upgrade to Windows 10 I'm expecting more problems. I'm thinking about the possibility Jim mentions, that would be a solution for me too. Just need to find someone who can do that for me. Edited August 8, 2015 by page Quote
kinuta Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 I'll no doubt stick with Windows 7 until the pc packs in or I'm forced to change to 10 by circumstances beyond my control.Anything but the dreaded Windows 8.As we used to say in Yorkshire, I wouldn't give it house room. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 22, 2015 Report Posted August 22, 2015 I upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday. Took 20 - 30 mins. No issues whatsoever - everything working as normal, desktop icons all inside their fences. Not too sure what it does differently but it was free (I bought a new PC in April and the upgrade was part of the package). Quote
JohnS Posted August 22, 2015 Report Posted August 22, 2015 Upgraded in the week too. Took over an hour but following the install the desktop looked much the same as before. Like Bev everything seems to work much as before. Third party apps didn't make it but I'm not sure I wanted them anyway. Played about a bit with the start menu and tidied it up.So far so good. Quote
