Hardbopjazz Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 (edited) I would say it is a safe bet, that the most sacred and sort after recording by any of us jazz archeologist, is finding a the recording of John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery. I can't think of any other legendary teaming that I which would surface. Any others come to mind? Edited April 5, 2009 by Hardbopjazz Quote
White Lightning Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Trane and Larry Young come to mind Quote
paul secor Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 How 'bout Cecil and Albert Ayler? Quote
Alexander Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Pops and Bix, with Jack Teagarden and Earl Hines. Hey, a fella can dream, can't he? Quote
BeBop Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I'm still looking for Buddy Bolden. Quote
JSngry Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Better start the washing machine, because Wes/Trane & Ayler/Taylor exist. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Trane and Larry Young come to mind Amen to that suggestion!! Quote
Peter Johnson Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Better start the washing machine, because Wes/Trane & Ayler/Taylor exist. Reeaaaalllyyyyy........ I remember a brief mention of this in another thread, but thought the "resolution" of the question about Trane & Wes was inconclusive... Oh man, if those tapes exist... Jim, do you know more??? Quote
Tom in RI Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 The Trane & Wes would also include Dolphy? You've heard this Jim? Quote
JSngry Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I've not heard the Trane/Wes thing, but I seem to remember somebody posting here (or somewhere) that they had, and that the sound quality was extremely poor, but that the holder of the tape still wanted an exhorbitant fee to let it out. Ayler/Taylor was part of the Ayler tree material that circulated last year, and might be slated for inclusion in the upcoming(?) set that Revenant(?) has planned. But it does exist, and has been circulated. Quote
Brad Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 How about bird, sonny berman, kenny drew, paul chambers and blakey. That'd be a hell of a combination. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I'd love to hear that concert that had Shepp, Ayler and Trane. Among other things. . . . Like a lot more of Billie with Basie. . . . Quote
Late Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Do tapes of Ornette with Dizzy exist? Can't remember the photographer, but there's a relatively famous picture of them together on the bandstand playing. Quote
Jim R Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Don't know the answer, Late, but I Googled the image anyway: Dizzy Gillespie and Ornette Coleman performing at the Lord Buckley Benefit at the Jazz Gallery. December 5, 1960 Bob Parent / Archive Photos Quote

The only reference I recall (here at Org) was that trading site that Dan Gould posted about, where somebody had it listed. I don't recall the details now, but as far as anybody knew, it still hadn't been "circulated"... which is why I'll remain skeptical for now... Quote
jazzhound Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 More Williams with Weather Report. Quote
Tom in RI Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 As long as were fantasizing here, I'd wish to hear Bird, Ben Webster and Serge Chalof together. And throw Fats Navarro in there. Playing Monk tunes, with Monk on piano, yeah that's the ticket. Max Roach would have to be on drums. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Ayler/Taylor was part of the Ayler tree material that circulated last year, and might be slated for inclusion in the upcoming(?) set that Revenant(?) has planned. But it does exist, and has been circulated. I get the feeling that this is the case. I'll write Dean and see what he says (or is willing to spill in advance). Quote
brownie Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I have a copy of that Ayler/Taylor broadcast. .. What I am waiting for now is some broadcast from the 1943 Earl Hines big band that had Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bennie Harris, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan and others... Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I have a copy of that Ayler/Taylor broadcast. .. What I am waiting for now is some broadcast from the 1943 Earl Hines big band that had Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bennie Harris, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan and others... Oh yeah! I'd also like to hear Miles' 1961-62 group that included J.J. Johnson. Regarding the Trane/Wes audience tape, a subject that's surfaced a couple of times here & on the old BNBB, Lewis Porter does refer to such a tape in the performance bibliography of his Coltrane bio. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I really would like to hear the Hines band with Bird & Diz too! Something that comes to mind that at least did exist is the Duke Ellington session from 1925 with Sidney Bechet. It remains unissued. Quote
JSngry Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Yeah, how that Hines band seemingly remained COMPLETELY undocumented is on of the biggest mysteries in the history of the world as far as I'm concerned. Something's just wrong with that picture. RE: Wes/Trane, I'm pretty sure one of the hardest of the hardcore collectors on one of these boards, and a reliable source at that, mentioned having heard the tape. So I myself am in the "convinced it exists" camp. Quote

I (still) wonder if he (or anyone) has actually heard it. Did he mention it at all in the text of his book? Quote

So I myself am in the "convinced it exists" camp. I tend to agree. It seems totally logical that at least some tape exists (they even played together at the '61 Monterey festival), but it would be nice to see/hear some more concrete evidence after all these years... Chuck Nessa Posted February 22, 2004 Report Posted February 22, 2004 I have never understood the attraction of the Wes/Trane pairing at this time. It does not sound like a special combination to me. Quote
