There, his impact was immediate and would prove to be memorable. He was quickly part of a quartet with pianist Forrest Westbrook, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Bill Schwemmer. They rehearsed at Westbrook’s apartment at 2021 Sta. Monica Blvd, Hollywood, where this unreleased material was recorded at the end of that month. It was an amazing session, in which Carmell, oozing confidence and assertiveness, demonstrated a fresh, virile and imaginative style, with a warm ballad tone and an authoritatively implacable swing at up tempo. The highly responsive rhythm section locked right on him all the way, and also revealed Forrest Westbrook as a highly talented and sensitive pianist, with an advanced concept of improvisation, and a built-in propensity for swinging hard. Along with the pungently powerful Peacock and the driving Schwemmer, they provided an ideally vigorous support for Carmell Jones, who, unbelievably soon, would come to be regarded as among the finest trumpeters on the West Coast. Also not sure if everybody's getting paid who could/should get paid, but if they got the tape from the source itself, I'm sure that somebody in the chain got paid, so conscience will be, if not clear, then at leasttranslucent if/when actually bought. I'm having a horrible time remembering now but there was someone on the board who was a Carmell completist and he should be all over this. In fact it's thanks to him that I have a nice transfer of that Carmell Returns LP. I used it on one of my earliest BFTs. It was recorded at a Gainesville FL radio station with a local group, if memory serves. Quote

Bobby Bryant, Bob Cooper, Westbrook, Rumsey and Doug Sides. Revelation's John William Hardy also wrote the liner notes for the three original Carmell Jones Pacific Jazz albums in the Mosaic Select, revealing himself as an early associate/fan of Jones' from back in Kansas Quote

Anyway I notice a couple of things on the listing - it does say "Special thanks to Leslie Westbrook" - presumably the heir to the pianist who was instrumental in getting the music out. So at least the pianist's family got paid. I'd like to hope that they found Carmell's heirs at least too. And the text says that the session was recorded at the pianist's apartment but down below it says "Recorded at Forrest Westbrook studio". Maybe they meant "Forest Westbrook studio apartment". Anyway I jumped on this and I am hopeful that it is as good as they say. It's kinda like the Uptown release of Hank Mobley/Bennie Green - a future star, right before he was discovered. Quote

It really was recorded at the "Forest Westbrook studio" - the pianist had a studio set up in his apartment, where the band rehearsed. 2. Sound is perfectly good though I will admit I am listening on high quality PC speakers. 3. This was recorded as a demo and presented to Dick Bock. He didn't use it but obviously Carmell made an impression on him. 4. Just because it wasn't purchased by Bock doesn't mean it isn't very good. Do not sleep on this, especially if you dig Carmell. 5. Oh, and the pianist gets a long feature on "Aeregin". He's good. Quote

Direct from the source, I paid $16.79 including shipping, and it took just a week to get here. You may want to use the Paypal pay option, their online payment service was down. I never actually received the order confirmation message but I knew Paypal had paid, and they were very quick to respond to my status inquiry a couple of days after I ordered.
