There's a Gil Evans record there I've never even heard of.

Betting it's Purisutisu, which turns out to be the Antilles Priestess.

That Gil/Kikuchi thing is a monster, highly recommended. It's more like the CD version of There Comes A Time than the LP version, if you know what I mean.

Oliver's side is a keeper too, in my book, just because it's a roaring-ass live big band recorded very nicely. Soloists are not always..."stimulating", but they don't suck. The main thing, though, is that big-band energy as applied to those charts.

Please elaborate...! Thanks.

cdjapan.co.jp is my favorite way.

The Gil/Kikuchi album keeps the tunes longish, and the electronic colors abundant (and when Gil went into electronics, colors abounded). And Billy Harper is ALL over the thing!

There comes A Time LP vs CD - LP was marvelous, but a lot was edited out. CD restored much of it, and to gripping effect, imo.

Yes, there's at least half a dozen there I'd like to obtain. Strictly speaking Mel Lewis and Friends is not a big band date, quintet mostly as I recall, along with a piano trio track (Hank Jones). Nice record. Freddie Hubbard, Gregory Herbert, Michael Brecker (IIRC), Hank, Ron Carter and Mel.

Gil Evans/Kikuchi is excellent. I wasn't aware that the CD offered more music.

Let me clarify lest purchases be made in vain - it's the Bluebird CD of There Comes A Time that contains more music.

Though IIRC it doesn't contain 'Aftermath of the 4th Movement..." which was on the Lp but if you want it on a cd you have to buy a strange hybrid from RCA called "Battle of the Bands: Charlie Mingus and Gil Evans".

I think all the material is on this 10 track version I got from France - http://www.amazon.com/There-Comes-Time-Gil-Evans/dp/B000006YK5/ref=sr_1_3?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1431638437&sr=1-3&keywords=gil+evans+there+comes+a+time

I now see this version is available from Japan - http://www.amazon.com/There-Comes-Time-Gil-Evans/dp/B0000563KG/ref=sr_1_4?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1431638437&sr=1-4&keywords=gil+evans+there+comes+a+time

RCA put this version of Little Wing on the "Plays Jimi Hendrix" cd. But it was on the original "Comes a Time" lp. So the American "Comes a Time" cd has only 8 tracks.

Not Priestess - it's a Japanese Philips/Fontana LP simply titled Masabumi Kikuchi + Gil Evans, and starts off with a brief rip through Bley's "Ictus." Good one.

other than Billy Harper, Hannibal and Gil, the orchestra is made up entirely of Japanese musicians.

Joe said there was one on the list that he hadn't heard of. I was betting that it was the one called "Puristisu", and looking at the albums on the link provided, my hunch was that it was Priestess, since that's the only one that's on the site that is not on the list.

Some of those translations, btw, come off pretty funny (as often happens with Japan/English translator engines.). I particularly like "Buddy Rich / Mercy, Mercy - Live At Shizasu Palace 1968" and the two Quincy Jones titles "I think of jazz" and "Walking-in-a-space".

Pleased to see this great album which I've had on vinyl since the seventies:

Me too. I think if I had to choose one out of the whole lot, it would be this one. Dizzy at Newport and the Buddy Rich are great too, but I already have them on CD (along with several others).

My version lists track 6 as Aftermath the Fourth Movement / Children of the Fire.

Mine as well. The french BMG CD from 1995. This is its rear card:

any comments on the 2 Carla Bley releases

I'll probably get the live European Tour 77 disc - nice lineup there (tentet including Michael Mantler, Roswell Rudd, Elton Dean, Gary Windo, Hugh Hopper, Andrew Cyrille)

European Tour 77 is one of my favorites.
