dougcrates Posted April 30, 2015 Report Posted April 30, 2015 (edited) Warner Japan is reissuing Count Basie's Roulette albums on August 5. http://wmg.jp/special/countbasie/index.html Edited May 1, 2015 by dougcrates Quote
JSngry Posted April 30, 2015 Report Posted April 30, 2015 Not seeing Fantail on there..have never heard it either, was it new material or jsut a compilation of previous Roulette releases? If it's in Spanish, will I still be able to understand it? Quote
Head Man Posted May 1, 2015 Report Posted May 1, 2015 I presume all this music is on the two Mosaic sets? It is tempting though, the sound of the recent Warner reissues has been excellent and I do like to listen to complete albums rather than in recording order. Quote
Late Posted May 1, 2015 Report Posted May 1, 2015 If it's in Spanish, will I still be able to understand it? "Splanky," translated into Spanish is ... Splanky. (Though auto-correct does suggest "spleeny.") Neal Hefti was an early supporter of Esperanto. Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted May 1, 2015 Report Posted May 1, 2015 I see that "String Along With Basie" is included in this series. That album wasn't part of the Mosaic sets, probably because it was not by the Basie band. It's a delightful record, though... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 1, 2015 Report Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) Agreed. Nice rekkid! Edited March 30, 2016 by jazzbo Quote
JSngry Posted May 1, 2015 Report Posted May 1, 2015 Joking about the Spanish Fantail, but serious as to what it was. That's one I'd see on all the Roulette inner sleeves of the 70s (the Echoes Of An Era series ran pretty good for pretty long, remember), that one & Sonny Stitt's Stardust. Quote
gmonahan Posted May 6, 2015 Report Posted May 6, 2015 I see that "String Along With Basie" is included in this series. That album wasn't part of the Mosaic sets, probably because it was not by the Basie band. It's a delightful record, though... That's the one I'd be interested in. I'm also interested in getting the Japanese issue of the Verve "Basie's Beat" on cd. Anyone know of a site in English where both of these could be ordered? gregmo Quote
king ubu Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 (edited) I presume all this music is on the two Mosaic sets? Not quite - they left off the vocal albums with Billy Eckstine, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan (that one's on her Roulette Mosaic though, as is Vaughan/Williams/Basie, as far as Sassy is concerned, and I assume the rest is on the Basie Studio Roulette Mosaic) and Joe Williams with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross - that last one is particularly fun, if you enjoy LH&R (I love them!). Eckstine: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WPCR-16601 Vaughan: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WPCR-16604 Bennett: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WPCR-16605 Williams & LH&R: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/WPCR-16599 Also, this one, which sounds pretty interesting (Freddie Green solos!) is absent from the box, I understand - it's a small group album it seems - Memories Ad-Lib: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=WPCR-16600 Guess I'll get me the Eckstine, Bennett and "Memories Ad-Lib" ones! Edit: "No Count Sarah", the other album Sassy did with Basie's band but (again without the Count himself, or rather: already, since it is of an earlier date), is part of the "Divine" set from Hip-O-Select. It's not on Roulette anyways ... and neither on the Basie Clef/Verve box (but I assume the Verve/Mercury deal may have been why it could take place?) Edited June 2, 2015 by king ubu Quote

You can pre-order "String Along with Basie." Quote
king ubu Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 missed that in my list ... here's the link: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/WPCR-16598 there's also a reissue of the Birdland All Stars set - pretty good music on that one: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/WPCR-16606 the live portion of it was not on the Roulette Live Mosaic if I'm not mistaken (that one has three dates only, the "Breakfast Dance and Barbecue", "Basie at Birdland" and "Live in Sweden" ones). jazzbo Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 There's also this one, thankfully being reissued: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/WPCR-16597 Quote
king ubu Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Forgot about that one, too ... went for the Freshsound eventually, just wanted to hear it! Quote
Head Man Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Thanks, both of you, for sorting that out. Looks like I need to get another pre-order in at CDJapan. Quote
king ubu Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Here's some more about "Memories Ad-Lib": http://www.jazzhistoryonline.com/Count_Basie_Joe_Williams.html Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Found that one as a cheap used LP a few months before my wedding, partially for the tune "Sweet Sue, Just You". I didn't use it on the tunes I tracked for the reception but I do remember really enjoying the LP. I need to revisit though, it's been quite a while ... Quote
crisp Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 Is there a way of telling if Japanese CDs are mini-LP sleeves or jewel case? Quote
JSngry Posted June 9, 2015 Report Posted June 9, 2015 Nobody recalls Fantail? Curious when it was released. Quote
762rob Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 (edited) I assume by the price these are jewel cases, mini LP covers usually run about 18-22 yen. Edited July 26, 2015 by 762rob spelling! Quote
762rob Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 Ordered a bunch of these for September delivery. With shipping and discounts came out to $12.74 ea Quote
762rob Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 Nobody recalls Fantail? Curious when it was released.Looks like it was a compilation of previous tracks from other Lp's issued after Basie returned to Verve. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 Thanks! That's what I was wondering, exactly. Kind of a "revenge" album for the marketplace. Quote
762rob Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 CD Japan delivered these this morning....ordered 17 of them; listening through headphones right now to the first one - "Not Now I'll Tell You Later"Three are mono, "Basie" (Atomic), "Live At Carnegie Hall", "Eddie Davis Trio" I have an early Atomic CD in Stereo on French Vogue/Roulette from before EMi acquired the Roulette catalog, (now owned by WEA....)Which is why we are getting all these Roulette re-issues....WEA Japan is doing a great job getting these titles out. Ted O'Reilly Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 My "String Along With Basie" arrived this morning, and has been played through twice. Lovely! Nice to hear Ben Webster with Basie for three tracks, and Illinois Jacquet on the other seven. The only drawback is that (while I already know it) all the personnel / dates info is in Japanese only.  Tunes / composers in both Japanese and English, and the original liner notes are in English on the back, and I assume that's the same inside, in Japanese.I have long liked this slightly-odd Basie release, and am happy to have it on CD in nice, honest stereo Quote
jazzbo Posted September 15, 2015 Report Posted September 15, 2015 I got "String Along," "Ad-Lib" and the Lockjaw in yesterday; they sound excellent. Quote
