ejp626 Posted April 22, 2015 Report Posted April 22, 2015 Not sure the Mravinsky is a great deal, at least not at present. Suggested retail is $55 or so.But the Sony 20th Century Masterworks looks very tempting. Can currently be pre-ordered at Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.ca. I believe for US residents, Amazon.co.uk is the better deal (18 GBP) whereas it is basically a wash for Canadians (with less chance of a customs hold-up if one goes with Amazon.ca).Thanks for the heads' up. Stefan Wood Posted April 22, 2015 Author Report Posted April 22, 2015 The prices usually drop before the release date. The Masterworks does look good, as the Ozawa. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted April 24, 2015 Author Report Posted April 24, 2015 Seriously, couldn't DG find more flattering photos of Fricsay? The one on the first box was hideous, and this slightly better. Quote
Bigshot Posted April 24, 2015 Report Posted April 24, 2015 That's his best Jack Benny impression! Quote
mjzee Posted April 28, 2015 Report Posted April 28, 2015 Good to know. I've been thinking of buying the Gould Bach box, which has recently dropped in price. Better to wait for this (to drop in price). Quote
Stefan Wood Posted April 28, 2015 Author Report Posted April 28, 2015 I'm done waiting. I ordered the Bach Gould set from Amazon uk (approx $68 shipped) some days ago. I don't need everything he did. Quote
crisp Posted April 28, 2015 Report Posted April 28, 2015 Link? I can't tell what this Gould box is. Quote

Van Basten II Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 Seriously, couldn't DG find more flattering photos of Fricsay? The one on the first box was hideous, and this slightly better. Apparently they are running a contest about who's going to put the ugliest depiction of him, guess the guy ain't photogenic. Quote
mjzee Posted June 29, 2015 Report Posted June 29, 2015 Just noticed that Sony will also be releasing this on a USB stick. See: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Glenn-Gould-Remastered-Complete-Collection/dp/B00WSAVRMA/ref=sr_1_3_twi_2_usb?ie=UTF8&qid=1435615445&sr=8-3&keywords=glenn+gould+box Quote

mikeweil Posted March 12, 2016 Report Posted March 12, 2016 What these companies do is bordering on box set obsession ... Mining their back catalog instead of supporting current artists. Quote

jazzbo Posted March 12, 2016 Report Posted March 12, 2016 They're making money. The put them out, they sell, it works. Quote
David Ayers Posted March 12, 2016 Report Posted March 12, 2016 What he said. Back catalog used to be the foundation of classical music sales. Now much less so. This way those who want it can get it all cheaply and easily. I don't buy them but that is just my preference. These sets are really the only way that a lot of this stuff can come back. Probably it was Brilliant Classics who showed the way. The big company sets put most of theirs in the shade... Quote
