jeffcrom
Steve Lacy recorded dozens of solo albums, but 5 x Monk 5 x Lacy on Silkheart is the one I would take to a desert island.
clifford_thornton
I'm extremely fond of this one: I have a hard time choosing among the Braxton soli, though the ones I have skew toward the earlier end - Delmark, America, Arista, Futura. Hard also to choose a Lacy solo as there are so many stupendous ones. Solo at Mandara is really nice (have only heard it - don't own a physical copy). Cycles is one I've been spending time with lately - partly including duets with a dancer - and it's quite wonderful as well. Need to check out that Silkheart disc as the only sets of his on that label that I know are ensemble.

king ubu
Jimmy Lyons, too ... but yes, Lacy, Braxton, McPhee, Mitchell, Bluiett - great stuff! Saw Lacy and Mitchell live, playing solo. Two of my fondest concert memories for sure!
optatio
recorded during the AUTUNNO MUSICALE DI COMO - sept. 75 - in the SAN FRANCESCO CHURCH - Como - Italy RED Record VPA 120 From the back cover: OCT. 20 77 Thanks for the cassette. I agree with you that the music is very good. (I taped it myself at the concert) steve lacy
clifford_thornton
Yes, this is a beautiful record. I'm also all for Brötzmann solo, especially 14 Love Poems but there are other excellent ones as well. Generally put brass in another category from wind instruments but there are of course no peers to this:

clifford_thornton
"The Dirlston Dirler" is my pick, even if it is a duo.

clifford_thornton
True, forgot about that disc on Tzadik. He's got an interesting concept going now, though I must admit his group playing ca. 1966-1970 is really quite something.
jeffcrom
Generally put brass in another category from wind instruments.... "Wind instrument" means any brass or woodwind - anything you blow through to get a sound and subsequently have to get the spit out of.
