mjazzg Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 I've just been enjoying Urbani's alto (and soprano) contributions to Giancarlo Schiaffini's Jazz A Confronto. It's the only time I've knowingly heard his playing. Anyone out there have any recommendations or views on other recordings? I'm tempted by his own leader date on Horo and the Rava on the same label Quote
Leeway Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 I picked up Urbani's Easy to Love recently, as well as a Giovanni Tommaso Quintet disc featuring Urbani, need to give them a spin. Quote
JSngry Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 He's a little un-zone-y for my tastes. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's not. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 4, 2015 Report Posted April 4, 2015 I'm tempted by his own leader date on Horo and the Rava on the same label don't have his leader date on Horo but the Rava is excellent. Quote
optatio Posted April 5, 2015 Report Posted April 5, 2015 Massimo Urbani Quartet: The Blessing. Red Records RR 123257-2 [1993] rec. February 21-22, 1993 Massimo Urbani (as) Danilo Rea (p) Giovanni Tommaso (b) Roberto Gatto (dr) as guest Maurizio Urbani (ts) ... probably his best recording ... four months before his sudden death by heroin. Is "sudden death by heroin" an oxymoron? Some wild-and-woolly playing by Urbani on this album, that I enjoy. Edited October 26, 2017 by mandrill Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 26, 2017 Report Posted October 26, 2017 Did eventually get the Horo -- it's a bit monochromatic at times, but good. The 2LP set on Red, on the other hand, is awesome. A sudden death from heroin is possible. People quit using, then come back to it at the level they'd previously stopped using, and subsequently overdose. Quote
sambrasa Posted June 11, 2019 Report Posted June 11, 2019 Funniest clip and interview here, where Calvin Hill says he came to Italy to play with the greatest trumpeter he's ever played with, Enrico Rava, but it's worth it even if he has to play with two of the worst musicians he's ever known, Massimo Urbani and Nestor Astarita: Of course, things are not quite as bleak as can be attested from this absolutely smoking outfit, which consists of Enrico and Massimo alongside with three Scandinavian beasts, Palle Danielsson, Jon Christensen and Bobo Stenson (a Dane, a Norwegian and a Swede) : Quote
