l p Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) http://www.challengerecords.com/products/1410775336/ someone told me about this as i was filling the gaps in my bh collection. the first 6 tunes are holiday. there is an old session of 3 holiday tunes that are listed in discographies as from cologne 54, http://billieholiday.be/Sessions/Session0120.htm i haven't yet compared, but at this point, it would seem that those 3 tunes are from another city, probably from the same tour. Clunky Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 I've mentioned this elsewhere . It's highly recommended . Quote
king ubu Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 Not sure how "new" and "previously unrleased" this is (neither how "from original tapes" is meant ... the Coltrane release in the same series sounds a bit muddy and has the usual fake applause, so it's maybe "original dubbed/edtied/faked tapes", but certainly not "original tapes") ... how does this compare to the Blue Note CD "Billie's Blues"? l p Posted April 2, 2015 Author Report Posted April 2, 2015 i'm told that this is different from Blue Note CD "Billie's Blues" 1954 basel, switz. (also on verve box, and also aka cologne)http://billieholiday.be/Sessions/Session0122.htm i'm going to try to compare this new cd to the basel and the old 3-tune cologne session, but i suspect that with holiday it's probably hard, because the backing instruments don't solo, and her vocal delivery is set for each tune. Clunky Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) The Holiday session appears to be just one date and the SQ is excellent for the era. Very clear , decent balance. Edited April 2, 2015 by Clunky Quote
medjuck Posted April 2, 2015 Report Posted April 2, 2015 Amazon has this set as a DVD Blue Ray Audio and as a cd. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_20?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=billie+holiday+live+in+cologne+1954&sprefix=billie+holiday+live+%2Cpopular%2C206 Is the 3 tune Cologne set from the same date? And is it available? Quote
l p Posted April 3, 2015 Author Report Posted April 3, 2015 i checked 2 tunes of this new cd against Blue Note CD "Billie's Blues" 1954 basel, switz. (also on verve box, and also aka cologne) and they are different versions. as for the old session of 3 tunes that are listed in discographies as from cologne 54, http://billieholiday.be/Sessions/Session0120.htm i wont be able to check it for a day or two, but it has Lover come back to me, which is not on this new cd. those 3 tunes are on Perfect Complete Collection: Live/Private Chronological Order Vol. 06/12 (SoundJ LDB.06) Masters Of Jazz - Vol. 20 Nov.1952 - Feb.1954 (KBF 1320) Lady Day Box Vol. 07 Of 12 (JUTB 3041) the Masters Of Jazz is probably the easiest one to find. l p Posted April 3, 2015 Author Report Posted April 3, 2015 ok, so "Billie Holiday buddy Defranco Quartet - live in cologne 1954" 1.22.54 Jazzline label 1 Billie's Blues (2:56) 2 All of Me (1:43) 3 I Cover the Waterfront (3:28) 4 Them There Eyes (1:54) 5 My Man (2:48) 6 What a Little Moonlight Can Do (3:05) and old version http://billieholiday.be/Sessions/Session0120.htm 1 Billie's blues (I love my man) SAME AS VERSION ON JAZZLINE 2 What a little moonlight can do SAME AS VERSION ON JAZZLINE 3 Lover come back to me (incomplete, fades out) NOT ON JAZZLINE Lover come back is end of show jam session with holiday, Red Norvo, Buddy DeFranco, et al. the piano player, Carl Drinkhard, made the a/b comparing pretty easy. jazzline is much better sound quality than the old version. l p Posted April 3, 2015 Author Report Posted April 3, 2015 the Coltrane release in the same series sounds a bit muddy and has the usual fake applause, i'm pretty sure that the jazz icons video of this coltrane show (March 28, 1960 Düsseldorf) doesn't have any applause. Quote
king ubu Posted April 3, 2015 Report Posted April 3, 2015 Thanks a lot, l p, for all those details! So I need to buy another disc, it seems ... (and need to get started on the Jazz Icons DVD's finally - I've seen one or two from the library, but not the Coltrane). Quote
medjuck Posted April 18, 2015 Report Posted April 18, 2015 i checked 2 tunes of this new cd against Blue Note CD "Billie's Blues" 1954 basel, switz. (also on verve box, and also aka cologne) and they are different versions. The Blue Note and Verve both claim it's Cologne. The Blue Note says it's from January 5 though according to the Jazzline the tour didn't begin until January 11th. The Verve says January 23rd which is plausible since the Jazzline (obviously a different concert: Billie's Blues is with the trio on it vs a large group on the Blue Note/Verve) and the Jazzline says their concert is from January 22nd.
