hbbfam Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 I am really enjoying the music and sound of Miles Davis In Stockholm (1960). I realize there is a set from Paris that same year:All of You: The Last Tour, 1960 How does the sound of this one compare to the Stockholm set? Quote
erwbol Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 (edited) My guess is that the set you mentioned is a bootleg (Acrobat Music). This release on Fremaux might be legit, however. Fremaux Amazon.fr Past legit releases of the Paris material sound fine, like the Stockholm set on Dragon. Edited March 5, 2015 by erwbol Quote
erwbol Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 It seems the set you mentioned does not contain material from Paris 1960 (March, October). Quote
erwbol Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 Other legit releases: Stockholm on Dragon Previous legit release of the Paris concerts. Zurich Amsterdam. Best saved for last. Not as good as the track So What from Scheveningen (near The Hague) from the same night that was included on the Kind Of Blue 50th anniversary Legacy edition. Quote
hbbfam Posted March 5, 2015 Author Report Posted March 5, 2015 Here's the link for the "Last Tour" http://amzn.com/B00N42F4EI Anyone actually have this one? Quote
erwbol Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 Look at the second picture on amazon. It's not from Paris. Quote
hbbfam Posted March 5, 2015 Author Report Posted March 5, 2015 Look at the second picture on amazon. It's not from Paris. i do realize that. I was wondering more on the sound quality. The Stockholm set sounds very good to me. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 Other than the obvious fact that they are Miles and Trane together, are any of these particularly recommended? Quote
hbbfam Posted March 5, 2015 Author Report Posted March 5, 2015 Other than the obvious fact that they are Miles and Trane together, are any of these particularly recommended? I started this thread after listening again to the 4 CD Stockholm. It is not only great music, but the sound quality is very good. I certainly recommend this one. So now I want more. And ask the same question...what others of these CDs are recommended? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 The Paris Coltrane material is my fave, but all are worthy. Quote
erwbol Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) The legit Paris, especially, and also Zurich releases are recommended for the performances and sound quality. The Amsterdam set is not that essential if you want to hear Coltrane on fire and sound is poorer by comparison. Bootleg releases from other dates from the tour are bound to be of inferior sound quality. Radio broadcasts from decades ago. All of those can be easily found on Dimeadozen (no official releases allowed there). For example, the material from 9 March, 1960 Scheveningen (The Hague) on the All of You: The Last Tour set is probably of the same poor quality as on Dimeadozen. Similar for the material from West Germany. It might well be some of the material was not even properly speed corrected where needed. Edited March 6, 2015 by erwbol Quote
medjuck Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 Another recommendation of the Paris gig. The crowd's whistling during Trane's solos only adds to the excitement. He's on fire. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 Many years ago I read that whistling was the European equivalent of booing. Was that wrong? Quote
erwbol Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 fluitconcert Fluiten means to whistle in Dutch ... Not but Quote

king ubu Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 Some previous discussion, including some eye witness accounts I once typed from the booklet of the first (I think) official CD edition: Quote
GA Russell Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 In the '60s I had an album by The Searchers recorded live at The Star Club in Hamburg (where, I believe, The Beatles also played), and there was a great deal of whistling from the audience. Quote
Bluesnik Posted March 7, 2015 Report Posted March 7, 2015 Past legit releases of the Paris material sound fine, like the Stockholm set on Dragon. I have this and can confirm that it sounds fine Quote
