Theo Loevendie is another fine bcl player from Holland; mostly known as a composer of contemporary music, he also led some heavy jazz ensembles in the '60s and '70s on which he played a variety of reeds and piano. And on Loevendie's LP Chess! (BASF), Harry Sparnaay stands in for him admirably.

In fact, Moore's "solo" section during Gerry Hemingway's The Marmalade King is superb. His duet on alto saxophone during the closing section is also as strong as anything I've heard from the great reed player on record.

And YES - I know it is OOP and very expensive to get.

Fwiw, it is now available from one seller @$29.99 which is a good price for this disc - and worth every penny

Evan Chandlee played it with Keno Speller, Kenneth Terroade, Claude Delcloo and the Cohelmec Ensemble in the '70s. Definitely another voice worth checking out though most of his appearances are on scarce/obscure LPs.

Yes on Rudi Mahall!

I'll "3rd" Mahall.

Italian, Alberto Pinton is a very fine multi instrumentalist including bass clarinet. Check out any number of titles under his lead, group efforts like Dog Out or his latest venture Nascent.

There are some more of this band on his preceding Verve LP, and on another Riverside LP. Plus some live tracks from a TV show.

FWIW, the Fresh sound reissue adds some of these as a bonus. Very nice relaxed music, Herbie had a comfortable feel on the instrument, but never again picked it up after these recordings, AFAIK.
