Dan Gould Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Not my scene but I saw this in an Ace Records newsletter as an upcoming reissue and wondered if anyone else knew/would be interested/excited: http://acerecords.co.uk/self-determination-music Quote
Bill Nelson Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Yes, the consistently high level performances defy the industrial sludge/crud depicted on the cover. I'm sure it was Not Quite Runner-up for 1970 Album Cover of the Year. Ten years later, when purchasing my sealed cut-out at Atlanta's Wuxtry, even the punkster clerk raised his eyebrows. That was when they had remainder lots of sealed original ESP-Disk LPs hanging around the jazz bins for $5 each. Quote
JSngry Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Dusty Groove already "sold out", but amazon us has a release date of 3/6 (iirc) and is still taking preorders. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Nice to see Bobby getting some attention. He is a delightful man. Quote
colinmce Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Ditto. The resurgence of this group since 2010-- every record they made together save Night Fire has been re-released since then-- has been a joy. Thanks so J. Horowich for kicking it off. I heard this group for the first time when the Mosaic came out and following the thread has been a major musical highlight of the last 5 years. This is some of my very favorite music. Quote
Late Posted March 3, 2015 Report Posted March 3, 2015 To those who've purchased a copy — does it come in a jewel case, or is it a digipack? I'm not a fan of digipacks, but I'll be getting it regardless. Too bad it's not on International Phonograph, but at least it's out. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 3, 2015 Report Posted March 3, 2015 (edited) This is on my list - along with 'Flight For Four'. I purchased the Mosaic Select not having heard much of either artist (although I saw Bobby play in LA once) and was pleasantly suprised. This is good stuff ! Edited March 3, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
2scoops Posted March 3, 2015 Report Posted March 3, 2015 To those who've purchased a copy — does it come in a jewel case, or is it a digipack? I'm not a fan of digipacks, but I'll be getting it regardless. Too bad it's not on International Phonograph, but at least it's out. It comes in a jewel case. I ordered direct from Ace in the UK, it was delivered yesterday. Not had much chance to listen, but so far I would say the material is on a par with 'Flight for Four', with perfectly accecptable sound quality. A pity we don't have the IP presentation of the previous release. Quote
Head Man Posted March 3, 2015 Report Posted March 3, 2015 To those who've purchased a copy — does it come in a jewel case, or is it a digipack? I'm not a fan of digipacks, but I'll be getting it regardless. Too bad it's not on International Phonograph, but at least it's out. It comes in a jewel case, the sound is excellent as is the artwork. IMO it's a "must-have". Quote
Late Posted March 3, 2015 Report Posted March 3, 2015 Thanks 2scoops and Head Man. I agree — this is certainly "must-have" music. I've been listening to it as a vinyl rip for fifteen years now, and it'll be nice to finally have the music in a legitimate package. I'll probably buy at least one other copy as a gift. I love that musicians like John Carter and Bobby Bradford (and Bruz Freeman and Tom Williamson) can experience a sort of mini-renaissance of interest in their work because of a reissue. I especially hope that younger people, in their teens and twenties, can be alerted to these important sounds. There are recurring hollers on the internet that the compact disc is dead, but when reissues like these come along, I'm heartened. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 3, 2015 Author Report Posted March 3, 2015 This is only $8.39 thru an excellent distributor of Ace and many other labels: http://www.ebreggae.com/ They are also an Amazon seller but usually a few dollars more thru them, but you can definitely buy with confidence thru the Marketplace if you pick them. Pretty sure Jonathan was hoping to reissue this as his next project but was denied by Ace because they wanted to do it themselves. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 3, 2015 Report Posted March 3, 2015 (edited) Folks seem to forget a reissue predating the Mosaic by about a year: and some seem to forget he is a living, performing artist: Lots of other interesting things on Amazon and elsewhere. I can provide a list. Edited March 4, 2015 by Chuck Nessa Quote
king ubu Posted March 4, 2015 Report Posted March 4, 2015 and some seem to forget he is a living, performing artist: Lots of other interesting things on Amazon and elsewhere. I can provide a list. certainly one of my favourite new jazz releases of the past few years! :tup Quote
jcam_44 Posted March 4, 2015 Report Posted March 4, 2015 He's playing Monday the 24th at the Blue Whale in Los Angeles with VInny Golia. I'll be there, although the lady in my life is declining since its a "school night". Quote
jcam_44 Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 So take her to school with you. Haha, She sat through the last VInny and Bradford set with me in Oct without complaint, and we had a cross-country flight the next morning, so I'll give her a pass. She's not really a Vinny fan either. Quote
ejp626 Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 While I appreciate Dan's tip, it turns out their shipping to Canada is quite expensive (and apparently shipping/customs is getting worse across the board -- so I'll probably pass on getting any more Mosaics from here on out). But there was a pretty decent deal on Amazon.ca, so I decided to check the CD out. Quote

AmirBagachelles Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 This group and their modest output of four LPs has been my greatest obscure listening pleasure for about 16 years. I wish it had not taken almost ten years to find them after I got interested in jazz. Quote
