sidewinder Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) Any board members going to this one, scheduled in London for late March? http://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event-detail.asp?ID=17295 Edited February 24, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
mjazzg Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 I've got my ticket so if life doesn't get in the way I'll be there Quote
Head Man Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 Unfortunately death got in the way for me. I've a funeral to attend otherwise I'd be there. Quote
JohnS Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 Sadly no. The Barbican's always tricky for me. The South Bank would have been ok. Quote
mjazzg Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 I don't remember Billy Harper being on the original listing when I booked. That's a real added bonus indeed Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 Black Records? Shouldn't it be Black Jazz Records? I would really dig seeing this if I were anywhere remotely nearby. Seems like everything is better in England! Quote
sidewinder Posted February 24, 2015 Author Report Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) Seems like everything is better in England! Helps to make up for some of the crap we get over here most of the time.. The article in Jazzwise this month mentions that Tolliver likes playing to London audiences and gets a good reception here, which might have something to do with it. I last saw him here at QEH with his big band about 7-8 years ago now (just checked - it was 2007). That band had Billy Harper and Howard Johnson in it, amongst others. I don't remember Billy Harper being on the original listing when I booked. That's a real added bonus indeed That's true - first time I checked he wasn't on the bill and I remember thinking 'what a shame Billy Harper isn't in the lineup'. This morning I noticed he was in. Sadly no. The Barbican's always tricky for me. The South Bank would have been ok. I know the problem John - coming in from the South and SW you are stuffed if the venue is the Barbican. I'll probably try to get round it by parking for ease of access to Paddington. Edited February 24, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
BFrank Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 Wow - I would LOVE to see that! A dream line-up! Quote
LWayne Posted February 25, 2015 Report Posted February 25, 2015 Double wow indeed! Hope they have some USA dates.... Quote
mjazzg Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 Interesting interview with Tolliver https://www.jocksandnerds.com/articles/charles-tolliver Quote
JohnS Posted March 6, 2015 Report Posted March 6, 2015 With luck BBC may record this. Let's hope so. Quote

sidewinder Posted March 23, 2015 Author Report Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting the concert in a couple of weeks time, apparently. An early review of proceedings and some pictures here: http://www.jazzwisemagazine.com/breaking-news/13513-strata-east-live-sounds-sublime-at-barbican Great evening - personally preferred the first half when they treated us to classics such as Cowell's 'Effi' and Tollivers 'On The Nile', both great. The Harper feature from Capra Black was stunning too. Jean Carne's voice in the set after the break fit in very well but to me, the first half had the edge. Standout performance for me was Cecil McBee. Not a note out of place, rock solid. Really though, they were all marvellous. Nice to see those projected graphics too. They were selling souvenir posters by the artist in trademark Strata-East black and white and picked one up as a memento. Edited March 23, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
mjazzg Posted March 23, 2015 Report Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) I think the broadcast is set for 30/3 I agree that the first half shaded it. I thought they packed all the best tunes, the Strata East 'hits', in that first purely instrumental half - 'Efi', 'On the Nile', 'Soulfully I Love You'. The second half seemed a little less well-rehearsed to me but Carne's vocals were impressive (Mike Ladd's 'The Bottle' less so). Star for me, Charles Tolliver who seemed 'in charge' of the evening and played beautifully with such a cutting edge throughout the evening. They were all terrific exceeding my high expectations Great evening. Well done to Gilles Peterson for facilitating this. Tolliver said they'd be back - let's hope this is a continuing concern so others get to see this band Edited March 23, 2015 by mjazzg Quote
sidewinder Posted March 23, 2015 Author Report Posted March 23, 2015 (edited) Yes, one of the great pleasures of the evening was Tolliver's attack and the way that he used the positioning and movement of the bell relative to the mike to add drama to his solos. Not many trumpet players out there like him who really know how to aggressively cut through the ether like that (Miles was particularly good at this too). His enthusiasm was also very infectious. Really liked that first tune, a dedication to his mother I think, very nicely played in unison with Billy Harper. Edited March 23, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
