Head Man
I've started buying quite a bit of Japanese jazz recently and I wondered whether anyone knows of an authoritative book on the subject...in English, of course!
clifford_thornton
I bet homefromtheforest would know; the books I'm aware of are entirely in Japanese, exhaustive though they are.
Homefromtheforest
The only books I have seen over the years(online though and not in person) have been in Japanese. I think if you're looking for info then google would be your best friend!
Mori
Book - Blue Nippon, by E. Taylor Atkins. History, with some interviews of contemporary musicians. Websites & recommendations - http://www.jazzinjapan.com/new/
Homefromtheforest
Does that book have interviews with either Masahiko Sato or Masahiko Togashi?

Mori
As I remember it Atkins does not interview Satoh or Togashi, but he does discuss their work at length - specifically in the context of the attempt to fuse jazz with traditional Japanese music and aesthetics of the 70s and later. Satoh's Randooga project and Togashi's solo work are given due recognition. Togashi's Spiritual Nature and Song For Myself have just been re-released on East Wind, by the way. Some of Satoh's less jazz-oriented work is discussed by post-punk British rocker Julian Cope in his "Japrock Sampler" book, which is mainly about early 70s rock, but also covers the 1960s exploits of Japanese avant gardeists , such as Yoko's first husband and John Cage pal, Toshi Ichiyanagi. It's a good read.
clifford_thornton
Oh yeah - I think Cope was into that Soundbreakers record.
Homefromtheforest
The original Soundbreakers album is on my wish list along with the 1st issue of Takayanagi's "independence". I've had opportunities to buy both in the past but for some reason wasn't compelled by the price they were being offered at :
clifford_thornton
I would be okay with a repress of Independence. It comes up every now and then.
Homefromtheforest
I think the cover is sorta ugly on that second issue! That's why I avoid it. The tiliqua CD sounds good enough so that will keep me happy until I stumble on a windfall of $2000 or something like that...
clifford_thornton
$2000 is an absurd amount of money to spend on a record released on Union.
Homefromtheforest
That's what I've seen this offered at twice over the years. That said; both copies had the OBI which for some reason doubles the value at least to many Japanese collectors.

It's a good read. Yeah, I read the book. I was behind Cope's Krautrocksampler but only found his Japrocksampler, which I found also very interesting, centering around the early 60s pop pioneers and early 70s rockers. Homefromtheforest
I should add that I totally agree it's absurd money, but that's the problem with "set" sales! I think if this album ever came up on eBay it would probably go for around the $500 ballpark but if memory serves I don't believe this album has ever been on eBay at all! clifford_thornton
I've seen a couple of dudes flogging Abe's "Winter 1972" for $10K. I think they gave up. That price is just dumb.
SMB1968
Does that book have interviews with either Masahiko Sato or Masahiko Togashi? I think the one you need to pick up is William Minor's book. Scott

corto maltese
http://www.press.umich.edu/22978/jazz_journeys_to_japan Looks interesting. But the "Free Improvisers" get only 9 pages (Chapter 31) ...
Late
In July 2019, a small series (I think eight titles) of Koji Wakamatsu soundtracks were reissued by Solid for 1000¥ each. They were only on sale for two months. (CD Japan lists them all as "sold out," but a few titles can still be found on the internet.) My question is: Did anyone here pick up any titles from this extremely short-lived reissue series? One review on HMV Japan says that they're overly compressed, which, if true, would be a shame. The series (for the obi) looked like this:
Rabshakeh
Just in case anyone is interested, NTS, which is a London based online radio station, is doing a Japanese Jazz Week this week. https://www.nts.live/incoming/japanese-jazz-week I haven't listened to it yet, but NTS normally does gold shows. Can any of these be streamed after the fact? -- or do you have to catch them live on the "day of", or else they're gone? Seems to play from 3pm-5pm EST -- but I'm not sure if that's actually 3pm-5pm EDT (or if it really is EST, and therefore maybe it plays an hour earlier or later, depending on how that works -- I can't get my brain to figure that out quite yet this morning). If I could stream it all later, I'd love to hear all these programs.
