GA Russell Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Here is the list of the 2014 jazz releases that are up for a Grammy. http://www.grammy.com/nominees?genre=16 Any recommendations? Quote
paul secor Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Looks like I'd do well to stay clear of 90-95% of it Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Thanks for this. I had a quick shufti at the world music (yukk) nominations and foundToumani & Sidiki Diabate - Toumani & Sidiki - World CircuitI went straight onto Amazon and bought the download. No time to listen to it tonight, but tomorrow...Strange, I thought Sidiki (Toumani's father) was dead. Brilliant, classical, kora player, one of the greatest of his generation.MG Quote
ejp626 Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Doesn't look all that bad too me, though certainly a bit traditional or perhaps even stodgy. But I'd listen to most of it. Quote

MG That's a very good recording. I don't have the CD with me but I think it's a different Sidiki (brother or cousin of Toumani). Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Looks like I'd do well to stay clear of 90-95% of it That's all? I'm thinking 98-99% is more in my range. God, how awful are the Grammy's anymore? Quote

God, how awful are the Grammy's anymore? Not much worse than they've EVER been! Remember way back when Jethro Tull was nominated in the "Heavy Metal" category? Quote
Scott Dolan Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Not much worse than they've EVER been! Remember way back when Jethro Tull was nominated in the "Heavy Metal" category? Nominated?! They fucking WON!!!! Not that I have an ax to grind with Jethro Tull, but Heavy Fucking Metal?! Quote
ejp626 Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Are we talking about all the Grammys or just the jazz Grammys? How can you say you don't want anything to do with Kenny Barron and Bobby Hutcherson and Rufus Reid and Chick Corea (ok, maybe the Scientology thing is a little creepy)? And I know most of the Board thinks Jason Moran's Fats Waller thing is an abomination. But I've certainly seen worse slates... Quote

Nominated?! They fucking WON!!!! Not that I have an ax to grind with Jethro Tull, but Heavy Fucking Metal?! Maybe that wasn't a mistake, maybe it was on purpose, as a joke (or not)...just something to consider. Quote

It IS a fine album.MG Quote
SMB1968 Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 I must confess I haven't paid attention to these sorts of self-aggrandizing industry awards productions for quite some time, so I'm guessing it isn't new, but there's really a category for "best improvised jazz solo?" As opposed to a fully composed jazz solo?? Quote
ValerieB Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 happy that they're finally giving Wayne Shorter a Lifetime Achievement Award!! Quote
Shawn Posted February 5, 2015 Report Posted February 5, 2015 Jeff Lynne just announced that E.L.O. will be performing at the Grammys this year. It now goes on my to-be-watched list for the first time in probably 20 years. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 nice to see Shepp nominated, though I haven't heard the new record. Most of this appears to be pabulum - no surprise there. Quote
duaneiac Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 I did not watch the show, but I was pleased to see an award was given to Glen Campbell. I have not heard the song for which he won the award, but it was nice to see him given one last tip o' the hat from his peers. Quote
