mjazzg Posted January 21, 2015 Report Posted January 21, 2015 Another concert rather than festival in London, but with a celebratory theme: Strata-East Live: With Gilles Peterson Got my ticket. looking forward to seeing Cowell, McBee and Tolliver all for the first time. See you there Bev?Three days in Bristol in March. Nothing to my liking (except Dr John) but at least they're putting something together http://www.bristoljazzandbluesfest.com/ Quote

See you there Bev? Some very old colleagues there! I saw Cowell and Tolliver - together with Odean Pope and Jymie Merritt - in a Max Roach Quintet in Manchester in the late 60s. Quote

See you there Bev? Afraid not. I'm there the day before for the Boulez knees-up. Have to be back home for Sunday to be ready for work Monday. Would have made a good long weekend at some other time. A Lark Ascending Posted February 8, 2015 Author Report Posted February 8, 2015 (edited) There's a video up with the headliners at Cheltenham - had to do a screenprint to catch the poster at the end with the main names. http://www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/jazz/news-2/2015/02/cheltjazzfest-line-up-revealed/ Looks disappointing again. Sun Ra and Lee Konitz with Dave Douglas if you want to see legends; Scofield, Lovano (not together!), Medeski Martin & Wood for hipster jazz. Sure there will be more interesting things in the small print. Then: Caro Emerald (who? - might be a hat act), Rumer (heard a nice song by her a year or so back while waiting for my car to be serviced), Wilko Johnson (glad he's better and I'm sure he'd be fun but..), Martha Reeves and the Vandellas (surely not dancing in the streets?), Average White Band etc Looks like a nice Soul/Pop/World/Jazz festival - but not a lot for the more jazz-centred listener to get excited about. BFrank Posted April 30, 2015 Report Posted April 30, 2015 I'll be in London from 22 May through the 27th. Anyone have any music suggestions - jazz or otherwise? Not necessarily festivals, btw. Quote

Not necessarily festivals, btw. Difficult to suggest not knowing your taste but here's some venues for Jazz and classical/other. Rock and other genres abound too You may have already looked at these but https://www.cafeoto.co.uk/events/ http://www.vortexjazz.co.uk/ http://jazzinlondon.net/JIL/JILfrontpage.htm looks old fashioned but the listings aren't http://www.barbican.org.uk/ http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/ http://wigmore-hall.org.uk/ http://www.kingsplace.co.uk/ Time Out will have the best weekly listings, tuesday to tuesday, on their website http://www.timeout.com/london I hope you find something. If you need anything more specific feel free to PM Edited April 30, 2015 by mjazzg Quote

Then Gerry Hemingway at The Stone for a week end of July/beginning of August!!! Plus word is that they will have a better working air conditioner!!! As my pal Maurice said the other night, he will believe it when he *FEELS* it!!! Quote

BFrank Posted April 30, 2015 Report Posted April 30, 2015 Thanks for all the input! I have some of those links, but there are some "new" ones, too. I'll definitely check them out. BTW, I can't adjust my schedule, so I guess I'll have to miss Evan Parker - oh, well ... I already got tickets to see Clapton at the RAH. I would not normally go out of my way to see him these days, but seeing him in London in his self-proclaimed favorite venue kind of tipped the scale. Also, our hotel is only about 3 blocks away - so it will be very convenient. Quote

Unfortunately my travel plans make me miss this by 4 days, but I will hit the Exeter gig with the new "A Bigger Show", huge band: Composition for a 23‐piece ensemble, ... , involving three actors/vocalists, full big band plus double rhythm section... Any chance to see you or Bob there? Edited May 1, 2015 by jazzscriveyn Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted May 1, 2015 Author Report Posted May 1, 2015 Afraid not - I'll be back in the Midlands by then. Unfortunately his St. Ives concert this year is a week before I get down that way. Sure it will be good. Have fun. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 2, 2015 Report Posted May 2, 2015 Will see if I can make the Barnfield show Frank and also look at heading down to Bridport (which is a bit nearer) for that show as well. Looking forward to some more Westbrook shows this Summer ! Quote
jazzscriveyn Posted May 2, 2015 Report Posted May 2, 2015 (edited) Have fun too, Bev, at Bath. Bob, fingers crossed I'll see you in the foyer at the Barnfield before the show or during the break Depending on timing i might have to leave soon after the show to catch a bus/train. "Caught In A Train"? Sounds good. 'Barnfield' will be a probable for me - Bridport much more a definite. It will be nice to catch a Westbrook performance in that pleasant resort (good place to retire to). Edited May 3, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
