Herbie, Ron and Tony

I've just become aware that the two Herbie Hancock Trio LPs with Ron Carter and Tony Williams on Sony/Japan from 1977 and 1981 have been reissued on Wounded Bird. I haven't heard the earlier one but the later one is fantastic. Have these every been available domestically in any form except for the recent monster CBS box? (I do have the recent Wound Bird reissue of Herbie's '74 solo LP "Dedication."

I have both as Japanese reissues on CD (my copies are at work, or I'd cite when they were issued), they I've had them at least 6 years, iirc.

There's also one (just one?) similar trio date under Ron Carter's name - which is a 3rd title by this same trio well worth getting (my copy's also at work).

Are those the only three titles with/by Herbie+Ron+Tony? Or are there any others?

Right, you're referring to "Third Plane" by Carter on Milestone. I can't think of another offhand. . . .

The two Japanese Sony dates and "Third Plane" (under Ron's name on Milestone) are the only pure trio LPs with Herbie, Ron and Tony. BTW, there are some trio tracks on Ron's "Uptown Conversation" with Herbie and Billy Cobham. There's some fantastic playing on the record. Not nearly as well known as it should be.

sounds very interesting. I have the japanese sony of VSOP "Tempest at Colloseum" , was something like a "cult record" when I was young, just a "must". So it might be interesting to have a record only with the trio. Anyway, with Tony Williams on drums nothing can be wrong.....

Would the Wounded Bird releases be any good sonically? No original sources perhaps?

Both the Sony '77 & '81 are still available as blu-spec2s from CD Japan, and with the dollar currently on a high...

Thanks for the recommendation on Uptown Conversation - always wondered. 1st official "organissimo recommendation purchase" of 2015, I am sure there are many, many more to follow

I always wished this trio would have played together more often as a trio. They will, of course, be immortal as Miles' rhythm section, and offered some nice work on the VSOP projects.

Word is the Wounded Bird transfers for the trio titles are the same as Herbie's Columbia box. The dynamic range rating of "Flood" was identical with the HDTracks release.
