definitely the same person, a bit of googling (eg this biography) suggests that "Carl Drewo" is the most common spelling, followed by "Karl Drewo" while "Carl Drevo" is rarer... (how he managed to achieve multiple spellings of his name I couldn't find out)

Klaus Schulz uses the spelling "Drewo" throughout in his "Jazz in Österreich 1920-1960" book and in the liner notes to the Austrian All Stars CD (RST 91549-2), and as an Austrian and expert on Austrian jazz he really ought to know. ;)

I'm not going to check my old volumes of JAZZ PODIUM to find additional evidence but I have a feeling "Drevo" is strictly wrong (as for why this happens, ask the record production and artwork people - if they can get away with designing records by "Charley Parker" they can get away with anything, it seems ... :g ).

there's also a rather unusual spelling of Bora Rokovic on the cover of the first LP (plus: it should, of course be "schlägt" and "Walzer"), if you read the original liner notes, #50 here , the impression of cluelessness and bad editing is confirmed...

for sure his family/roots came from czech heritage (as manny families would come from to vienna during the austria-hungarian monarchy the turn of 1900 due to unemployment......) and DREVO (in czech =wood) would be most likely pronounced in vienneses dialect like DREWO, which (like in manny other cases) would change the spelling of a slavic name over the time......but from memory his name he used as artist was DREWO....

Yes ... like in many countries, which is why it was Bora Rokovic here (see earlier post by Niko) but Borah Minevich in the States. ;)

I remember him well. Saw him live and loved what he did. Great musician. He came frequently to Jazzland to play gigs, but I think at that time he had moved to St. Gilgen/Wolfgangsee.....

That´s it. So I think he came to Vienna only sporadically, but it was always a gas to hear him with greats like Fritz Pauer, Bert Thompson and Fritz Ozmec. Remember one time Erich Kleinschuster sat in for a really fast "Move". Carl Drewo might have been in his late 50´s maybe 60 but looked smart and much younger, more like an aging sportsman than a jazz musician. I was quite surprised that he died soon after that, he looked so healthy.....

Gheorghe, Soulpope... Nice to see the reference to "Jazzland", the venerable Vienna jazz club. A great spot, one that I'll put on my list of great places to hear Jazz Music. Much thanks to Axel and Tilly Melhardt for keeping it going for decades...

(edited for spelling error)
