JSngry Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 Might have been less hassle to have one soprano hidden in the closet... Quote
street singer Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 Got my copy of 'All Music' in the mail today; listening as I type. Great stuff... And yes, some mighty fine liner notes! Quote
Spontooneous Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 There's already a copy of the CD on eBay. Quote

J.A.W. Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 well, maybe it IS yours and the postman found it after it "fell of the truck." That'd be nice... It's still not here. Did you happen to see the postman nick it, errr... "pick it up"? I'd like his full name and address, please Quote
couw Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 didn't see him and I may be wrong. Mine hasn't arrived yet either and the cute post women here can be trusted, I am sure of that! Quote

garthsj Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 Thanks Chuck! My CD arrived today ... it is playing as I write this ... the sound is great! I really missed my LP, and this fills that gap ... thanks again for your effort to keep this music alive. Garth. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 Wife taunting me on the phone just now: "Hey, you got some junk mail today that I'm going to go ahead and toss for you..." Me: "It wouldn't happen to be from somebody named Nessa, would it?" Her: "Yeah, that's it. Probably some Michigan mail-order outfit... don't worry, I'm pitching it out right now!" Quote
Clunky Posted March 19, 2004 Report Posted March 19, 2004 Having Spam here in Scotland for lunch, never tasted better IMO. This is one hell of a release. !!! Quote
catesta Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 Got it today!! It's great, thanks Chuck. I was excited, but had I known it was this good, I would have been pissing in my pants like a baby man type excited while waiting for it. BTW, nice liner notes JS. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 Finally getting a chance to listen now... DIG IT!!!! I wanna see more pics from the session. I'm curious about microphones and placement and such. Quote
Clunky Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 the recorded sound quality is very high, sounds full and rich. It makes interesting comparison to the "Star Highs" session. Hank Jones on the later gives a rocco classical feeling compared to Levy's approach on "All Music". It'll take some time to absorb fully especially all the bonus cuts but I love it already. I recently got "Apogee" which sounds rather hectic and takes some getting used to its high pressure sound stage. Thanks again Chuck Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 20, 2004 Report Posted March 20, 2004 the recorded sound quality is very high, sounds full and rich. Yeah, I was just thinking the same thing. The music, commented upon so eloquently by Lawrence Kart and Jim, is marvelous, but I'm also struck by how good the sound is, even on my computer here at work. Quote
J.A.W. Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 The album is even better than I remembered. Highly recommended Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 21, 2004 Author Report Posted March 21, 2004 (edited) Ghost started an ALL MUSIC thread on All About Jazz and I got pissed on. He offered to delete the thread and I said I'd deal with it. Hans sent a notice about the message too. Thanks to both. Damn. I hate this shit. Edited to mention I sent a message to Mike Ricci about it. I will be interested in the response. Edited March 21, 2004 by Chuck Nessa Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Time to rally against the foo's!@allaboutjazz.com. Le's go! Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted March 21, 2004 Report Posted March 21, 2004 Actually it was just one foo , and the posts over there are generally civil in my experience. The thread is under General Music, btw, and not New Releases. But here's the thing: I'd really heard Warne on record in the 40's, with Tristano; a couple of sessions in the 50's (with Konitz or Pepper); but mostly, I'd heard Warne in the 1980's on those many recordings coming out of Europe and various other places. That seemed to be his most well documented decade (though I'm not a completist on him at all, far from it). The thing about All Music is his 70's era playing is on another level all together, and I wasn't getting that from his solo breaks with Supersax, not like this, anyway -- the projection of his ideas is much more forceful, and the control he has over nuance is superhuman. Listening to "Easy Living" on All Music -- every note seems to be regarded for it's tonality within the line. He plays freely from sharp to flat within the smallest intervals of the phrase, let alone the tune's general harmonic center. That imparts more emotion in his playing, and gives the line, not just the solo arch, a sense of tension and release that is slayin' me. "Easy Living" is killin', though there are more spectacular performances on the recording, especially, as noted, the variation on "What Is This Thing Called Love." Quote
wesbed Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 (edited) My first experience with Warne Marsh will be when I receive my just-today-ordered Tristano/Konitz Mosaic box. I may be coming back for Chuck's reissue in the weeks to come. Unfortunately, not much information here. I'll admit ignorance and ask... this is a title that has been out of print for some length of time? As I've written, many a time before, a person just never quits learning about this great music. Rooster_Ties Posted March 22, 2004 Report Posted March 22, 2004 Edited to mention I sent a message to Mike Ricci about it. I will be interested in the response. I will be too. Please share here -- if you can, Chuck, or if you think it not unwise to. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 22, 2004 Author Report Posted March 22, 2004 HOLY CRAP!!!! The copy of All Music on Ebay went for $66. Quote
