ghost of miles Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 (edited) This is very exciting news, Chuck! (Note Nessa-inspired avatar.) Edited February 19, 2004 by ghost of miles Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 19, 2004 Author Report Posted February 19, 2004 I have noticed Melvin before and remember your interest when you were here. Responding to your email publicly, the price is $15 and if you send a check I will cash it now - I need it (to make this happen, I just spent $2000 I don't have and want to send Warne's widow a check. If you send plastic info, I will hit the account when I ship. Legalities, or I'd hit it right now! Quote
John B Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Great news! You just answered part of my email, too. Looking forward to finally hearing this album! Quote

Guest Chaney Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 I hope I'm not muddying the waters but now might be a good time to also place an order for other Nessa goodies. Von Freeman anyone? Quote

JSngry Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 (edited) Let me get the conflict of interest out of the way up front - Chuck honored me by asking me to contribute a supplemental liner essay, and I did. For a Warne buff like me, it was a supreme pleasure. So that's that. Now, speaking objectively - this is a SUPERB album, one I've treasured since it was first issued back in 197?. I've had the privilige to hear an advance copy of the CD, and I tell you - the sounds is incredible, perhaps the very best that Warne has ever been recorded, certainly amongst the very best. But the sound is just the icing on the cake. Besides the greatness of the orignal album, there's some alternate takes on here that would be worth the cost of admission alone. Pretty mind-blowing stuff from a pretty mind-blowing player. Unhesitatingly recommended, conflict of interest or not. Edited February 19, 2004 by JSngry Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 19, 2004 Author Report Posted February 19, 2004 I was about to mention the "added benefit" of a JS essay, but I's been beat to the punch. The cd is just over 78 minutes of very fine Marsh. Quote
Joe G Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Chuck--all right if I lay the cash on you at the gig Sunday? B) Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted February 19, 2004 Author Report Posted February 19, 2004 Sunday? Is that the Muskegon gig? I was thinking Tuesday. No problem, I will see you whenever. Quote

RDK Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Intriguing. I'm not familiar with this album (and only have a bit of Marsh to begin with). Is this Warne in a quartet setting or something more unconventional (for him)? And from the mid-70's? Is it a fairly typical date for him or something more offbeat and out there (as I'd expect from a Nessa release)? Might be a good opportunity for me to grab a few things I've been meaning to grab from Chuck... Quote
JSngry Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 (edited) It's Warne w/Lou Levy, Fred Atwood, and Jake Hanna. Tristano-ised standards and a blues. Swings like a mofo. Nothing "out there" about it, at least not more than any other Warne side. Edited February 19, 2004 by JSngry Quote

This was the rhythm section of Supersax, the band Warne worked with at the time. Quote
BruceH Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Will this get into stores at all? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 19, 2004 Author Report Posted February 19, 2004 Once again, I'm too late. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 19, 2004 Author Report Posted February 19, 2004 Will this get into stores at all? It all depends on the tenacity of the damn stores. It is available to them. Quote

Might be a good opportunity for me to grab a few things I've been meaning to grab from Chuck... Uncle Skid and I heard a pre-release version of this at Chuck's house a while back. That was the first time I was aware of hearing Marsh and I was blown away. It is amazing. I've been waiting patiently for this announcement. Will you be at Docker's on Sunday Chuck? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 19, 2004 Author Report Posted February 19, 2004 Will you be at Docker's on Sunday Chuck? Ann and I will be there. By the way, my car worries mention in the Newport thread came to fruition. Last night the clutch cable broke and I had to walk home. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Chuck... bring some discs to the Dockers gig. I'll buy one, Johnny Gist will probably buy one, Joe will buy one and Randy will probably buy one, too. I need some Warne Marsh in my collection. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 19, 2004 Author Report Posted February 19, 2004 Not from Newport, but from the corner of Livingston and Elliot. It was friggin' cold. Put your foot on the clutch and BAM your foot hits the floor and the pedal is gone! Quote
