paul secor Posted December 29, 2014 Report Posted December 29, 2014 Interesting that The N.Y. Times magazine, in its year end remembrances of those who passed away in 2014, included only Pete Seeger of all the people mentioned in this thread. They included some fairly obscure folks, at least imo. I guess I live in a different world than the editors of The Times live in. I'm happy to be where I am. Quote

I guess we have to add Buddy DeFranco's name to this sad list. gregmo Quote

One would think a man who was as important a figure in jazz (although he had not been actively performing for several years) as Horace Silver would merit a mention. Charlie Haden and Jimmy Scott both would seem to have been high-profile performers in recent years who should have earned the attention of the NYT. Quote

Hardbopjazz Posted December 31, 2014 Author Report Posted December 31, 2014 Erik van der Wurff, not into jazz, but a wonderful musician I'll miss! Who is Erik van der Wurff? A Erik van der Wurff (9 July 1945 – 22 September 2014) was a Dutch pianist, composer, arranger, producer and conductor. He worked mainly on soundtracks and as a composer for many movies and television shows. He primarily worked between 1977 and 2003. He also made acting appearances in two Dutch television shows in 1977 and 1980. He was the regular pianist on the Herman van Veen shows. Van der Wurff was born in De Bilt, Utrecht. In 2009, he was given the Order of the Netherlands Lion. Van der Wurff died from cancer on 22 September 2014 in Soest, near Amersfoort, Utrecht, aged 69.[1] Quote
page Posted December 31, 2014 Report Posted December 31, 2014 (edited) Thanks, Tom. Yes, indeed. I've seen him play many times and on different instruments but mainly the piano. He and Herman did work 52! years together. Herman sang a Brel song for him during his last show. At that moment it only had been 6 weeks since his passing and he told us it is hard that Erik isn't there with them anymore. My favourite song of Brel with the fabulous translation of Lennard Nijgh, originally "La chanson des vieux amants". It was lovely to sing his friend that hommage. I'll never forget Erik.http://www.hermanvanveen.com/overherman/muzikanten/erik-van-der-wurff/ Edited January 1, 2015 by page Quote
