Bright Moments Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 o.k. y'all keep this rated "G"!! I was just thinking, wouldn't it be cool to hear Art Tatum playing with Lee Morgan and Christian McBride?!!! or how about Dave Brubeck with Grant Green and Hank Mobley?!!! What combos would you put together to create your "dream" threesome? KEEP IT CLEAN!!!! B) Quote

Brandon Burke Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 (edited) Herbie Nichols, Eric Dolphy, Henry Grimes I wanted to say Mingus but I get the feeling Grimes might be more sympathetic to Nicholls' particular kind of dissonnance and off-kilter timing. Rounding out the quartet--only three?!-- would be a young (Evolution-era) Anthony Williams on drums. I was just thinking about this in the car the other day...... EDIT: Dream team #2 is me on bass clarinet, clifford thornton (above) on cello and....well....Grimes. Edited February 19, 2004 by Brandon Burke Quote
mikeweil Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Wayne Shorter with Richard Davis and Andrew Cyrille. Herbie Hancock with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille. Geoffrey Keezer with Christian Mc Bride and Jeff Tain Watts. (I restricted myself to still living musicians, with those already passed the possibilities seem endless.) Quote
Pete C Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Rollins, Roach, & Grimes. I can go for that, as well as Rollins, Holland, DeJohnette Rollins, Workman, Cyrille Quote

Late Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Wayne Shorter with Richard Davis and Andrew Cyrille. Excellent pick! Would love to hear Shorter with Cyrille behind him. Rollins, Ware & Elvin in the 60's would also truly be a Dream Team. On that font, I'd like to hear Rollins, Albert Mangelsdorff, and Elvin Jones around this time as well, with Albert shifting between "bass lines" and soloing. (Though we know that Newk doesn't let his trombone players solo that much.) Quote

clifford_thornton Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Teddy Charles, Mingus and Mal Waldron Or, let's say Grimes didn't disappear to California and instead went to the UK and continued playing: Grimes, Alan Skidmore and John Stevens (ca. 1969) Quote
kh1958 Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Elvin Jones. (in the alternative, substitute Coltrane for Bird.) Quote
Pete C Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 (Though we know that Newk doesn't let his trombone players solo that much.) Trombone players, plural? Would YOU let Clifton Anderson solo a lot if he was in YOUR band? Quote
