jlhoots
The Connection (1960) is a Redd album, but I've always thought of it as equally (at least) Jackie's.

Clunky
The Connection (1960) is a Redd album, but I've always thought of it as equally (at least) Jackie's. If non leader albums are included then "Davis Cup" and of course "Cool and Struttin" must figure as some of the best. I'd love to hear a decent vinyl copy of Davis Cup as it and New Soil are top drawer.
clifford_thornton
Was so thankful to be able to witness McLean, Moncur and Hutcherson in concert years ago - Iridium, if memory serves. I interviewed him and he was very kind and gracious.
Cali
I liked him when he was paired up with Lee Morgan, too - like Tom Cat, Charisma, Sixth Sense. Don't forget Lee-Way with Jackie's slashing solo on These Are Soulful Days! Edited November 26, 2014 by Cali

sidewinder
Ok, hello Sixth Sense, hello Frank Mitchell, hello too much reverb, but hello who cares? I didn't when I first heard it on a Liberty cassette. Still a major favourite !
Late
[W]ouldn't it be worth a consideration to ponder a pairing of Jackie with Alan Shorter and/or his book? I'd take that over the Ornette record. McLean and Al Shorter playing Shorter's tunes — some truly new gospel.

Rooster_Ties
My favorite Jackie 60's leader date would probably be the one with Woody Shaw and Tyrone Washington. If only...

Guy Berger
I like the sideman appearances mentioned here, but they also go to showcase that Jackie brought a real vision to his leader dates. Can't say that about all of his contemporaries.

Mark Stryker
Off topic: The cat who really shines on "Byrd in Flight" -- besides the leader -- is Hank Mobley. The tracks with him were recorded in early 1960, right at the start of his great 2-year run that gave us "Soul Station," "Roll Call," "Workout" and "Another Workout." This is a quintessential Blue Note hard bop track with a particularly great, note-perfect Mobley solo. So fluid rhythmically and melodically. So poised. Clunky
Byrd in Flight is DB's best BN session . Everything is perfect on this date. The bonus tracks on the Conn edition are equally good.

But between the playing of everyone, the quality and diversity of Byrd's compositions, the formal debut of Herbie Hancock and the Warren/Higgins beat I like it bestReasonable people can certainly disagree ... Good point I forgot about "Royal Flush" which is indeed of a very high calibre.
Late
... for me "Royal Flush" is Byrd's best all-around BN ... I have a soft spot for this one. My first Byrd purchase (on vinyl, back in the day). But, for me, the Half Note recordings take the cake.

Rooster_Ties
Have you heard it? I wish, but no. I've heard told variously that the tapes are lost, and/or that the drummer on the date was sufficiently 'not good' enough to have soured the whole session (supposedly the reason Jackie never wanted it released).
