Leeway Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 The schedule and line-up for the Winter Jazzfest in New York City, Thursday January 8th, through Saturday Janaury 10th, have been announced. http://www.winterjazzfest.com/lineup/ I haven't digested the entire schedule yet, but thought I put it out here for your consideration, edification or vilification, as it may be. I see a lot of interesting folks on the schedule, enough to likely get me to NYC, provided it is not in the grip of a major snow storm. I suspect many of these musicians will be touring after or before the NYC gig, so they might be coming your way. Quote
mjazzg Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 All of them over just three nights? crazy but fun Quote
Leeway Posted November 19, 2014 Author Report Posted November 19, 2014 On 11/19/2014 at 5:37 PM, mjazzg said: All of them over just three nights? crazy but fun Yes, you usually end up hustling from venue to venue (they're fairly close-by in Greenwich Village) to catch the shows you like most. Or, you can stay put if you like the line-up at that particular venue. Sets are about 50-60 minutes. Last year I was able to see about 6 sets each evening. It is a lot of fun, lots of hubbub, scurrying about, very loose and upbeat vibe. Quote
BFrank Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 I need to go one of these years. Looks like a mini, jazz version of South by Southwest. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 I went last year for one night. I had a great time. Only problem is very limited or no seats - but I found a way at my main venue to get a seat and move it up to the front left corner of the stage. Quote
BFrank Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 I think with relatively short sets and multiple small venues, seating would make the logistics of navigating the festival more difficult. Quote
Leeway Posted November 20, 2014 Author Report Posted November 20, 2014 Some of the venues had existing seating; these were mostly pre-existing clubs or theaters. Some of the more makeshift venues (large halls or rooms) had no seating or very limited seating. It probably would be a problem to provide full seating in those venues. So it really varied quite a bit. The festival pass does not guarantee seating, or even admittance at a particular venue, if it is too crowded/over-capacity. It never really came up for me, but it pays to get to the more popular shows and/or the smaller venues a bit early. In practice, there are enough venues and shows that the crowd tends to spread out. Quote
issho Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 The lineup continues to expand with website updates! I already have 30 acts I've marked to see, but I'll have to wait for the schedule of set times before making my itinerary. Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 (edited) can anybody figure out if and when JD Allen is playing? I was told he was, but I don't see his name; this whole thing sounds a little annoyingly zoo-like to me, but I guess it works for them. well, I see his name. Do they ever post exact times and places? mjazzg Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 (edited) That list is insane. Good insane but insane nonetheless There's more bands there than play in London all year. I'm almost tired just reading the list! Anyone going is going to have one hell of a time that's certain. Enjoy it and let those of us on distant shores know what such a cornucopia is like to experience And when my lottery ticket comes in (as I know it will with the Jazz Gods smiling on me) at the weekend I'll be flying over for Amina Claudine Myers Trio Tomas Fujiwara & The Hookup Myra Melford's Snowy Egret Marc Ribot & The Young Philadelphians w/ strings Kris Davis Infrasound Tyshawn Sorey Piano Trio I hope someone gets that Melford band recorded - Pi Recordings, if you're listening Edited December 11, 2014 by mjazzg Quote
