Big Al Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 James Spaulding was the friggin TRUTH. Still can't get with it otherwise. Higgins sounds bored. Man, you and I is in COMPLETE disagreement on this one! Quote

RDK Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I'm with those who really dig this one. But in a battle of wits I'm afraid I'd probably lose. Speaking of CD audio pseudo-tweaks, years ago I picked up one of those Keith Jarrett trio discs (used) that had those "CD rings" glued to the perimeter of the disc. Never noticed any difference in that good ol' ECM sound and I don't think they make those rings anymore. I wonder if I can get a premium for that disc on Ebay? Quote
Big Al Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 re: Spaulding or Higgins? You're wrong either way. Both!!! I think Higgins is particularly inspired, whereas Spaulding sounds like he's trying to blow all the wax outta his alto. I'll grant you that his flute playing on the second track (name escapes me) is sublime. But beyond that, he sounds like he's trying to out-Ornette Ornette! Me wrong? Man, that's the first time this hour! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted February 18, 2004 Author Report Posted February 18, 2004 Jeez! Now I know why Grey deletes his threads after the CDs sell... Quote

mailman Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 I can't believe some of you don't like this session. Its been a favorite of mine since I purchased the lp at least 20 years ago. Great arrangements affording a chance to hear Mobley's ideas fleshed out for a larger group. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 Jeez! Now I know why Grey deletes his threads after the CDs sell... Yeah Moose, this one is destined to rival DEEP's thread for longevity! I think it was those green rings, you mentioned.... Quote
Peter Johnson Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 Green rings? I don't know if you guys have tried this, but I use a green permanent sharpie to "color in" the outside rings of my CDs...keeps 'em tracking well, haven't had a skip since I started doing it! Quote
Big Al Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 I listened to this at work today, and it only confirms what I think about this album, and in fact, I'm even gonna back off my statement about Spaulding's alto. Still taking some gettin' used to, but at least it sounds good within its context. And Billy Higgins, once again, is THE MAAAAAAAN!!!! Quote
MartyJazz Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 I love this session, but could do without James Spaulding's alto squeals. Completely agree. I've always found Spaulding's alto presence on a date to be a negative. But otherwise, this is a damn good album. "There's a Lull in My Life" may be the best Mobley ballad on disc IMO. Quote

I find that if I draw green circles around my eyes, old video tapes are far less likely to have tracking errors. But I get some really strange looks from people... Quote
