2 down ("channel") has me stumped, but I have guesses for the rest...

Across:

1. Bonano

6. Jordan

7. salt ?

9. tritone

10. Lockjaw

12. Gates

13. hip

14. Pollack

16. waltz

17. cool ?

18. Groove

Down:

1. Birks

2. ---d-e ?

3. Fountain

4. Most

5. StanleyGetz

6. JuttaHipp

8. Airegin

11. Wallace

15. Crow

I don't do a lot of crosswords, but I do have some experience with them. In general, I don't think opposites are given as clues (e.g., "warm" for "cool").

One thing that would make it less ambiguous (although it would be more complicated and difficult) would be to make the puzzle more dense, with more overlapping letters in blocks and such. Perhaps a tall order, though. This was fun, thank you for doing it.

Jim R, I'm VERY impressed that you did so well!

It also means that the puzzle was not awful.

You got one of the technical terms but missed the other. (hint)

That is all you got wrong!

That's actually an easy one so someone else will know it.

I'm really impressed you got the fishy one.

Thanks, T.D.

I'll see if I can learn from the article and do another puzzle.

After all, there are two more bass players with ornithological surnames :-)

Sorry. I have to agree.

After six hours I can't answer the questions.

All the answers are the 'first' (or nickname) & last names with no space.

Anagrams, riddles, facts of their lives or names, dates and just silliness are the clues.

Following your additional information and with the help of Google, I've managed to get my score up to 9, but that still leaves 37 to be solved! :(

I wish the software was better and had more options.

The second quiz took 5 hours and 4 of that was layout.

I can't even directly save a picture of the puzzle!

I'm manipulating html files and taking screen shots

and editing those!

Getting more interconnects may be possible if I let the program take a long time to compute.

37? I think there are 25 questions.

I'm happy to give hints.

Barry, again I think more "density" would be preferable. There are so many spaces in this puzzle which are contained in only one word (or word sequence), and don't intersect other words, which makes it difficult to gain any momentum even when you find solutions. Hopefully that makes sense. :)

In terms of doing the puzzle without going to too much trouble (saving images and printing and scanning, etc), I just left the puzzle image and clues on my desktop and opened a text document in which I typed out the across and down clues. With puzzles that are spread out like these (not "dense" like a NY Times crossword, with blocks of spaces), it's not difficult to see where letters from solved words belong in the intersecting word that you're trying to solve. I just typed them out, using dashes for the unsolved letters (e.g., ---d-e when I was trying to solve "bridge" in the first puzzle).

All I've got so far is "MaxRoach"...

Ah, yes. 26 I make it. With Jim R's help (not to mention Google) I now have 10 solved.

Jim, short of finding much better software all I can do is let the program take a long time to do it's work.
Edit: more time did not help.

It tries to provide more interconnects.
Part of the problem may be that the answers are long.

I would print out the form and work with it.

"Maybe if we make it a group effort..."

Please do! Let's solve this sucker.

Ask for hints to specific questions.

or let the thread die :-)

That's an option.

OK, group effort it is. Here's my contribution:

Across

1 Sun Ra

12 Melba Moore

20 Sonny Clark

22 Max Roach

Down

1 Steve Swallow

3 Jelly Roll Morton

6 Yusef Lateef

7 Donald Byrd

19 Bill Holman

Posted (edited)

I've just read a Kenton biography in which Bill Holman is referred to constantly as Willis, besides which there's a Bob Florence composition dedicated to Holman called "Willis". (Going to the movies now - will return to the crossword later.)

Jazz Puzzle 3 - Quotes

This is a dumb idea.
There is nothing to figure out.
You either know who said the quote or Google to find out to complete the crossword.
However some of the quotes are nice to read.
