clifford_thornton Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 He may have been mentioned upthread, but Chuck Domanico is astounding on the Anthony Ortega Revelation material. !! Yep! Agreed! He gets a lot of space to himself. Quote
colinmce Posted October 24, 2014 Report Posted October 24, 2014 I wish WXU hadn't lopped off the bass solos. I had a line on the 2nd Revelation LP that had these but missed out on it. Still kicking myself for that one. Quote

Steve Reynolds Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 Listening to Jimmy Lyons with John Lindberg and Sunny Murray earlier tonight - Jump up Lindberg as a very young man hangs with two legends and more than hold his own. Quote
soulpope Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 "Japan Suite" features some remarkable (and for his standards ferocious) playing by Gary Peacock Quote
soulpope Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 Jean-Jacques Avenel really shines here...this recording from 1983 features some outerwordly bassplaying..... Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 ...and all those organists who took care of bass-ics with their left hand and feets, esp'lly John Patton and Larry Young. I'll have to check to list some particularly grooving tunes. Quote
.:.impossible Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 Electric bass? These days, Gene Perez. Not that long ago, Sal Cuevas. What about this thing? The funkiest smelling instrument I have ever been around. Something about the plastic that Ampeg used. The man who designed this instrument also invented an amplifying pickup rail for vibraphone. I believe his name was Oliver. I corresponded by email with him a while back. I'll have to dig through archives. He has since passed away. I want to say Jess Oliver. Quote
soulpope Posted November 2, 2014 Report Posted November 2, 2014 (edited) although me not being a fan of electric bass in jazz overall, here certainly is some incredible playing by Gerald Veasley, best augmented via (this album`s track) "Almost Like Me".......like one blogger once remarked "This ist the album Jamaaledeen Tacuma should always have recorded"..... soulpope Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Otherwise not on my radar, Bob Bowman plays here a hell of a bass (try "Central Park North" as taster) to keep this wild bunch going (together)....still not been released as CD, me believe..... Quote
JSngry Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 Bob Bowman, fine player, Kansas City cat who passed through NTSU relatively quickly when I was there, started strong, got stronger, and then got out and on with it. Been back in KC for a while now, here's a recent article http://www.kansascity.com/entertainment/ent-columns-blogs/back-to-rockville/article4001005.html Here are some discography: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/bob-bowman-mn0000060804/credits Quote

clifford_thornton Posted January 2, 2015 Report Posted January 2, 2015 Not sure about specific recorded performances but live, Tom Blancarte is a motherfucker - from Texas, now splits his time between Denmark and NYC. He also plays one of those electric Ampeg baby uprights. Quote
colinmce Posted January 2, 2015 Report Posted January 2, 2015 He can move. I like his record with Peter Evans, Charity Chan, & Weasel Walter. Quote

LouisvillePrez Posted May 30, 2015 Report Posted May 30, 2015 I have been revisiting this thread as I try to put together an 80 minute CD of jazz bass for a friend, working with what I own. This is what I have so far: Syeeda's Song Flute (Chambers) from Giant Steps Conference of the Birds (Holland) from Conference of the Birds GvE (Hopkins) from Air Time M.B. (Grenadier), from Ode by Brad Mehldau Ramblin (Haden) from Change of the Century Footprints (Carter) from Miles Smiles Nature Boy (Garrison/Davis) from The JCQ Plays Haitian Fight Song (Mingus) from The Clown 64 minutes Favorite bassists that could end up in final 16 minutes include: Pettiford (Brilliant Corners), Doug Watkins (Sax Col), Wilber Ware (Night at VV), Scott LaFaro (Waltz for Deb/Sunday at VV), bassists who played with Verve-era Bill Evans, Michael Henderson (Miles' Cellar Door Sessions). Any suggestions? Quote
