Steve Reynolds Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 Btw - I am still irritated that there was no Ingrid or Mat last Saturday night. I know Mat knocks my socks off every time and I think Ingrid is getting there. Quote
Head Man Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 my socks are still on. ... there's no answer to that..... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 I've been known to leave the socks on when I get "down to business" too. Quote

uli Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 One thing about Laubrock is she never shouts at you. But she is waiting for you. sometimes she whispers. i hate socks. Quote

AllenLowe Posted October 12, 2014 Report Posted October 12, 2014 (edited) to me her playing has the same deficits Dave Brubeck's piano playing has - it's like she never gets to the center of whatever idea she is implying; like, as I once said about ol' Dave, someone who keeps shuffling the cards but never gets around to playing the game. And a lot seem like recycled ideas, as in that clip above. Some nice writing (yes again like Dave), as at 33:40+, and Tim Berne is one of my favorites; but she, sincere as she is, just never does anything as an improviser. And I get tired of waiting. ....wait.....she wakes up a bit at about 38:00; seems to be channeling some Warne Marsh, which is a good thing, I like her sound there and now I am happy...I like 41:33; but she seems to have trouble sustaining her ideas....I don't know....frustrating music. Nice unison at 42:34. Edited October 12, 2014 by AllenLowe Quote

AllenLowe Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 this is one of those groups I keep trying to like; too many people seem to like them for there to be so little there there, so I listen...and listen... to me it's a failure of form and composition. Good players, bad ideas. very bloodless. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 which group? I'm not into Paradoxical Frog, I like Anti-House. Would like to hear the 4tet with Baars and Henneman. YMMV. Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 good question; my judgement is based on random listening, so I'm not really sure. Quote
Leeway Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Like Rodney Dangerfield, it seems as if Paradoxical Frog gets no respect. I do like this group quite a bit, maybe because it was in this ensemble that I first saw Laubrock, really dug her playing, and so perhaps spread my positive reaction to the group. However, I've been listening to the group over the last 5 years or so, live and on record, and I'm always entertained and even edified by their playing. One of the things I like about them is that each of the musicians has been growing and developing individually, as well as collectively. I like seeing that growth sort of take place right before my eyes (and ears). Having said that, I would now have to say that PF is my second favorite Laubrock ensemble, behind Laubrock-Rainey Duo. Incredible communication and a steady flow of interesting musical ideas. It's great to watch them in concert. I do like Anti-House, it's a heavyweight group. Still have yet to see Sleepthief but I like the discs. Quote
David Ayers Posted October 28, 2014 Author Report Posted October 28, 2014 Have to admit to a bit of Laubrock envy at this point. I very much like the Paradoxical Frog gig posted on YouTube. Quote
Leeway Posted October 30, 2014 Report Posted October 30, 2014 I just thought I'd mention that at a recent Paradoxical Frog concert at Greenwich House in NYC, they doubled the pianos. That is, Kris Davis played her piano, while Tyshawn Sorey had his drum kit snuggled up near his own piano and played piano and drums alternately. Laubrock played saxes of course. I think this group has a lot of surprises left in it. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted October 31, 2014 Report Posted October 31, 2014 I think people underestimate just how much her playing is invested in small gestures, which is something I like about it. I think a lot of people sort of cram her into a more extroverted box than she belongs in. I'd love to hear a recording of the trio with Tom Rainey and Dan Peck: xybert, maybe you'll be put off by Paradoxical Frog, maybe not. This is my favorite context to hear her in, but the Anti-House albums are awesome, too. looks like an alto to me... Quote

AllenLowe Posted October 31, 2014 Report Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) she switches to alto. On which I like her much better. these guys can play; they just need some shape. to me it evokes the old Martin Williams complaint of a soloist who "plays at playing a solo," rather than actually playing one. But I have to acknowledge that I am taking a real minority position here. Edited October 31, 2014 by AllenLowe Quote
