Saxophone__Vagina Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 When i search for this on google all i get is porn sites dealing with scat stuff, yuck. Anyone got and Scat singing songs they can recommend for me? I have heard a lot of Dizzy Gillespie's stuff. Quote
robviti Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 a google search of "scat singing" will provide background information without the porn. my two favorite scat singers are ella fitzgerald and betty carter. mack the knife (the complete ella in berlin - live 1960) and the audience with betty carter are two recommended discs. this inquiry sparks renews my interest in an old question: how did it come to be called "scat?" what, if any, connection is there to those things "scatological," i.e., having to do with excrement or excretory functions? the only thing i've come up with so far is that maybe when the first person tried to scat, it sounded like shit. mikeweil Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Robert S. Gold (in his book "Jazz Talk") says "scat" was one of the prominent nonsense syllables used in early jazz singing with lyrics escaped from the singer's memory .... Besides Ella and Betty I would recommend: Leo Watson - the wildes of them all Jon Hendricks, Dave Lambert, Buddy Stewart Babs Gonzales (crazy) and the many newer singers who all scat up a storm: Kevin Mahogany Judy Niemack Nancy King and my favourite of all, Carla White. White did a whole album of scatting (Andruline, still available from her). The others scattered the pieces of the albums. Quote
king ubu Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Babs Gonzalez! Love those early BN sides (thanks to Lon for selling me his duplicate CD a few months ago ) I'm not so sure about Ella. Not sure I really like her scatting. Roberta Gambarini (word did spread a bit, it seems since my first attempt almost a year ago over at that ******** board). ubu Quote
Pete C Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 One of the greatest scat singers working today is the Brazilian jazz singer, Leny Andrade. If you can find "Luz Neon" it has a killer verson of "A Night in Tunisia" Quote
