Sad news! Another jazz musician has passed.

Wasn´t he one of the pianists in the Volume 1 and Volume 2 Miles Davis Blue Notes alongside Horace Silver? These are among my favorite early Miles discs!

BTW: AMG only lists one disc by Gil Coggins as a leader: GIL´S MOOD

I have a Japanese CD reissue of Gil's Mood.

It's really nice. Calvin Hill on bass, Leroy Williams on drums.

Not sure if it's still available. I got mine from Hiroshi.

I'm going to get this CD on Smalls.

Coggins also appeared on one of those things that George Braith releaed on his own label.

Gil Coggins is also listed as the piano player with the Lester Young group on one of the Prez broadcasts from Birdland in June 1952. The session which first came out on one of Boris Rose labels (Ambrosia) was also included in the Prez box issues

Emusic has several Smalls sessions but has not yet added the Gil Coggins. I'll be watching for it.
