thirdtry Posted August 20, 2014 Report Posted August 20, 2014 Delmark is releasing a Buddy Tate session from Sackville in September that hasn't been on CD before. The great Texas tenor delivers the goods on this 1978 quartet session featuring the rhythm section of Wray Downes (piano), Dave Young (bass) and Pete Magadini (drums). Tate's first big break came in 1939 when at the age of 26 he joined the Count Basie band and took a killer solo on Rock A Bye Basie. After ten years with Basie, Tate led his own band for a twenty-year stint at Harlem's Celebrity Club, toured Europe, made club appearances and numerous recordings. Remixed from the original analog tapes this is the first issue on CD of this album. 1. June Night 2. If You Could See Me Now 3. Someday Sweetheart 4. Bye Bye Blackbird 5. Georgia On My mind 6. Alone Together 7. I'll Remember April http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LP82UQS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2GW3WTOB57QL6&coliid=I1HYT6YFFVPAUM Looks good to me! P.S. - This CD is not to be confused with the recent Storyville Records 2CD packaging of two Tate sessions which also carries the same Texas Tenor title. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 20, 2014 Report Posted August 20, 2014 That's a must have for me! Thanks for the plug. MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 20, 2014 Report Posted August 20, 2014 I didn't know about the Storyville reissue, either. Thanks again. The Storyville blurb on their website contains the following gem: Quote Buddy Tate is one of the saxophonists that represent the Texas Tenor sound together with Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb, Jimmy Guiffre and King Curtis Giuffre may COME from Texas, but represent the Texas tenor sound? Har har. (OK, I HAVE got the 45 of 'Big boy'. Even so...) MG Quote
John Tapscott Posted August 20, 2014 Report Posted August 20, 2014 (edited) Thanks for posting. I have several Tate recordings on Sackville in my collection and they're good ones, but don't have this one for some reason. So I pre-ordered it. Edited August 20, 2014 by John Tapscott Quote
