randyhersom Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 The category is parodies of other musicians that stand on their own as music, not just humor. The two examples I am thinking of are The Crunge by Led Zeppelin, lovingly parodying James Brown, and Tweeter and the Monkey Man by the Traveling Wilburys, Bob Dylan's Springsteen parody. Any other examples to add? Quote
BillF Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 As this is a jazz board, I think we should have a jazz example: http://www.angelfire.com/ca/mferguson/Grants.html Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 Country music has a lot of parodies. One I always liked better than the original was Ferlin Husky's parody of Johnny Tillotson's 'Poetry in motion': 'Enormity in motion' under the name of Simon Crum. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9qOosualt8 MG Quote

uli Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 I think some of Lester Bowie's takes on popular songs fall into this. Especially but not only stuff with Brass Fantasy. "My way" or "The great Pretender" may be examples. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 Bartok's parody of Shostakovich 7 in the Concerto for Orchestra. Quote
JSngry Posted August 14, 2014 Report Posted August 14, 2014 Don't know how respectful any kind of Neil Sedaka parody could be, but I do think this one is affectionate. Same for this one and Gene Vincent Quote
Balladeer Posted August 15, 2014 Report Posted August 15, 2014 (edited) The Fools "Psycho Chicken" (Talking Heads ´"Psycho Killer") Tiny Tim doin "Stairway to Heaven" is gorgeous - although I doubt that it was supposed to be a parody, more a peculiar cover version Edited August 15, 2014 by Balladeer Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted August 16, 2014 Report Posted August 16, 2014 Art Peppers' "Blues Rock" & "Rock Blues" (from the Omega tape sessions, on the Andoran issue) are kinda parody and pretty good, mostly 'cause you get to hear Carl Perkins play some blues. Led Zep's "D'yer Maker" is fall on the floor funny,as is the Stairway/Gilligan's Island parody of them. IMHO As this is a jazz board, I think we should have a jazz example: http://www.angelfire.com/ca/mferguson/Grants.html I get a 'your computer may be at risk' message here. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted January 5, 2015 Report Posted January 5, 2015 Jimmy Giuffre and some west coast guys (I think) did a R&B parody honkers parody, as did Srtan Freiberg. I'm guessing Jimmy's is better, if not nec'ly funnier. Quote
xybert Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 I always thought that Ween's It's Gonna Be a Long Night was a good Motorhead parody. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGgCy-hbp4Q Quote
jeffcrom Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 I've always gotten a kick out of Chubby Jackson's "Moldy Fig Stomp," a Dixieland parody with an all-star cast. I love the semi-unison glissandos by Coleman Hawkins and J.J. Johnson, and Teddy Wilson and Charlie Shavers have fun with it. I'm not sure Harry Carney got the joke - his solo is like one of his normal solos, just not as good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0yuRS0iAQs Quote
