fent99 Posted August 8, 2014 Report Posted August 8, 2014 Hi All Saw this in a local store on LP. Wondered if it was worth picking up since it has Art Pepper and Roger Kellaway on it. Seemed like a no brainer but don't know Cole at all and its among Pepper's last sessions. Any good? Colin Quote
BillF Posted August 8, 2014 Report Posted August 8, 2014 Haven't heard this album, but Richie Cole is a tremendous altoist who excels when pitted against others on his horn. He's made great albums with Phil Woods and Greg Abate. Quote
fent99 Posted August 9, 2014 Author Report Posted August 9, 2014 Cheers Bill. Of course its in Youtube and sounds fine so back to the store this afternoon... Quote
BillF Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 Your mention of Richie Cole on YouTube took me to this. Crazy stuff! Mr Henriquez' piano technique is somethin' else! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cjIaIs-4pU Quote
king ubu Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 it's my only Richie Cole ... ugly cover, lovely music he can be heard to good effect on some of those steaming hot Buddy Rich big band albums on Pacific Jazz (he was on board 1969/70 I think - at least that's when he was on records) also he made some records with Red Rodney - I've got some of that on one of those Camden 2CD sets from the 90s, not played often yet though ... BillF Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 Then there's this little-known session - a swingin' live date: And this one is a total gas! Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted August 9, 2014 Report Posted August 9, 2014 These's a degree of shtick that's not to my taste, but he could certainly get around the horn... Quote
Quasimado Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 Saw Richie live in the 80's. He was a fine player. Q Quote

Peter Friedman Posted August 10, 2014 Report Posted August 10, 2014 Return To Alto Acres is my favorite Richie Cole album. Some of Cole's albums didn't do much for me. They went "over the top" at times! Cole seemed to disappear from the scene for a number of years, but has fairly recently returned. He played at a jazz party I attended within the last couple of years. He sounded better than ever. Quote
