I do not have this title and was wondering if I could get some advice on a good sounding version of this? I'm thinking about trying that recent Japanese 200gm vinyl version or the SHM japan cd...any thoughts? Stereo vs mono? Dropouts?

I have the SHM. It is in stereo, and you can still hear the effects of Van Gelder compensating during the recording for Sonny moving around the room. It is good, but not your best bet for a best sounding version when including vinyl.

The SHM does not have the excessively hot highs on Philly Joe's drums from the RVG. There is a lot of high just from the way Van Gelder recorded the drums, but this is one disc where you can clearly hear that for the RVG he made the drums white hot. Another white hot RVG is Smoke Stack.

Can anyone give a comment/review on the Japanese mono 200gm LP? I don't have any LPs from this series so this might be a good candidate to try these out.

On the other hand I've heard that the stereo imaging is nice on this session?

Perhaps I should hunt down a Liberty stereo issue?

Music Matters. Japanese is from digital.

That would be my choice too but I'm too lazy for 45RPM...plus my systemdek IIx has to have the belt manually changed to switch speeds...adding to the workload haha.

It would be nice if it sees appearance on the MM 33 rpm reissue series eventually...those have all been fantastic so far.

I was fortunate enough to find a mono original in excellent shape recently. Comparison with my stereo United Artists pressing probably isnt fair but the mono is killer. Have to believe MM will release a 33rpm mono in the future.
